Looking to replace my sigma 50-500mm with either the 120-300mm s with 2x tele + maybe (1.4) or the 150-600 s + 70-200mm with a 2x tele
will also be adding a d750 in addition to my d600 or even replacing it. Mostly for wildlife and motor sports, not sure if the 120-300mm will double for other low light uses
Would like to get some thoughts on this please how much will the sharpness of the 120-300mm suffer from a 2x teleconverter or even 2x 2x?
Thanks for any imput

I have the old (non-S) 120-300 OS and a Canon and Sigma 2X. The Sigma TC seems to give marginally better results at half the price of the Canon. However, IQ takes quite a dive. f/6.3 helps, but if you really want reasonable IQ and perhaps some cropability I think you'll be looking to shoot at f/8 or smaller. To put it another way, I'm better off using a 1.4X and my 7D than the 2X with my 5D3. With all that said, I have seen some very nice results from others with the 2X, so results might be down to copy variance or skills/talent behind the lens or at the computer.

the 120-300 is lovely, but heavy. new teleconverters from sigma coming aswell btw :)

I have the 120-300 (non OS) - Works fine with 1.4 tele (even at f4) but won't use the x 2 with it - its soft even at f8.

I think all of sigmas new stuff has been excellent? Their older cheapo stuff was variable tho...

I have first version 120-300. I like it and find it works quite well with Sigma's TC's (NOT w/ my Nikon TC's). Not sure why you would buy the Sig 150-600 when it costs 2x the Tamron version.
I guess it depends on what you want the lens for... The 120-300 is an f/2.8 but heavier. I've not used the 150-600 but I would expect it to be used like my 80-400... a slower/lighter/general purpose long lens.

I used to have the Sigma 150-500 but changed to the 120-300 f2.8 OS a couple of years ago which I use with both 1.4 and 2X TC's performance is similar with the edge to the 120-300, plus you do have f2.8 when required, the drawback is the weight it is considerably heavier than the 150-600. I suspect the new 150-600 will be similar in performance and weight to the 150-600.

Well was thinking that getting the 70-200mm + the 150-600 hoping that the new s is as sharp as all there other new lens that would bring the cost near the same as the 120-300mm s and i do tend to use the 500mm + 2x tele even though its really soft. Which im hoping the new 150 600mm will be better at.

The thing to remember when using extreme telephotos ie a 150-500 plus say a 2X is that you are invariably shooting a subject that is some way away, why else would you be using such extreme measures. So at those distances you get a lot of atmospheric crud between you and the subject and as a consequence lose definition and contrast. Just something to remember when using ultra long focal lengths.
