So how many Nikon owners are going to order either a Nikon D300 or Nikon D3 ?

Myself thinking of getting a D300 when the prices go down and the bugs have gone !

Paul

D300 ordered 23rd August :)
There won't be any bugs :nono:

I'm getting trigger finger over a D3... That "add to basket" button keeps calling me, but I have resisted so far... :bang: :bonk:

Like you Paul, I'm considering a D300. But I have to sell our house first. Don't tell the missus. :nono:

If any of you feel an overwhelming desire to buy one of these but think your other halves wouldn't be too happy about it, feel free to have it delivered to my house. I can then use it for a while to give it that well used look at which point I will give it back to you (in 12 months time? that should really look well used) and you can use the 'Oh that? I've had it for ages, just look at the state of it' line :D

Wont she find out when the new tennants knock on the door?

Doh! Hadn't though of that. Maybe there'll be enough left after the divorce.

I'll keep it in mind. But don't hold your breath Foggy.

I'd love to get my hands on the D3 technology, when it comes down to a reasonable price. Meanwhile though I'm going to stick with my F3 and D200. Maybe I'll get a D300 when they're a bit cheaper, but it really doesn't seem like that much of an advance over the D200 from what I've seen so far. The D3 is awesome, but stupidly expensive right now.

Tempted by a D300 when the price falls a bit, would love a D3 but no chance at the moment :(

Over here, we're really mixed about D3 or D300.

We're both using D2X's, I'm using a Fuji S3 as backup and 'lowlight'

So far the choice is unclear. A couple of D300's, one each as backup + some lowlight work. Or a D3 between us for the jobs that need it.

I get the feeling though, that either the D300 or D3 would soon be used as main camera anf the D2X relegated to backup.
However, is the D300 up to the beating that the D2x's get? Is the lower sensor noise going to be all it's cracked up to be, after all. 12mp and the same size sensor as the D2X...

The D3 on the other hand, larger sensor, same pixelcount. It'll run away with the noise issues.
We shoot a lot of presentation evenings in poorly lit theatres and locations, lectures at managements schools. All places where you can't really flash. The Fuji is at it's limit there, wide openings and 1600iso. It's frustrating.

Fuji has one serious advantage over Nikon in those situations too. It's shutter is very soft and quiet. The D2X is like a gunshot by comparison. I'm curious to hear the new cameras in action.

What I fear is that we'll get a D3, then we'll fight over who gets to use it. <sigh>

I do a reasonable amount of classical concert photography, and it's a real challenge with the D2x in the low light, and it's pretty noisy shutter wise. I'm tempted by a D3 to fix the ISO noise problems, but I'm worried about shutter noise. I can cope with the D2x shutter, but any louder and it won't be useable for me.

The 70-200VR is getting bought first and then I have my eye on the D300 if the noise handling is significantly better than my D200, I do a lot of low-light work. That said I reckon it will be at least a year before I am seriously considering it. I could yet get another D200 and move the D70 on, for the money another D200 is still seriously tempting.

In my dreams I'd be buying the D3.

I bought the D200 a few days before the launch of the D300. I was well peeved at first after reading some reports that the D300 would be full frame but now that the full spec has come out I am happy with the extra 2-3 months use I will have on the D200 rather than waiting for the D300. Personally there is nothing much to gain, for me, on the D300 over a D200. If I had been buying in December I would have bought the D300 but it wasn't worth the wait.

Care to elaborate on the reasons why it hasnt been worth the wait?

I meant that IF I bought the D300 I would have had to wait 2-3 months longer than buying the D200. The D300 IS better but not so much better that I would rather have no camera for 2-3 months whilst I waited

I see the D300 has a couple/few more features than the Canon 40d, but does it really warrant the price difference of over £500?
I seems a bit excessive to me for £800 for the Canon and £1300 for the Nikon.

I suspect it's a bit like PC vs Mac. Yes, you could get a cheaper PC with a similar spec, but it wouldn't be a Mac

Point taken! ;)

D300 is down to £1099 at RGB-Tech so only £300 more than 40D. Atleast the D300 has proper weather sealing unlike the half arsed attempt of the 40D and A700.

The D300 is not intended as a rival to the 40D, more so the 5D. Although at this present time it sits somewhere in between.

The D80 is the 30D rival so when Nikon decide to update this body it will be the 40D rival.

Non of the Nikon semi/pro bodies feature the all singing all dancing automatic modes either, unlike the 40D.

Just how I see it anyway. Lets not start a Canon v Nikon debate as they are old hat. At the end of the day there is a lot more to taking photographs than the equipment.

King.

I might drop into one of the shops in Reading tomorrow and have a chat about pre-ordering a D3. One of the shops ( Station Cameras ) seemed very helpful when I went in for a sensor cleaning kit the other week. So maybe I'll go have a chat with them :)

Only downside of the D3 is that those of you with DX lenses will be paying a fortune for what amounts to 5mp!

Personally I would love a D300 but it is just a dream at the moment.

One of my lecturers has ordered his D3. Very jealous but also quite looking forward to having a play when it arrives :D

I'm still waiting to see more low ISO shots from the D3 before pulling the trigger on one. I want to make sure it's as good as the D2x at ISO100 before I get one. Long exposures are really nice on a D2x, and I've only seen one long exposure on a D3 so far.
