This tripod anygood?

Depends what you are using it for. Might work ok for a compact but put a DSR and a lens on it and I think you probably know the answer.

It may be better than nothing, but I found my cheapo tripod slipping (the camera/lens weight made it droop at the front) even with a light lens on it!!

You'll not use the tripod because it won't do the job.

Save and buy a decent one. Check out the Manfrotto range.

i think its this one as i have a 7dayshop one.

Not great but adequate for my simple needs.

Im normally one who goes against the grain and says "If you're not going to use it much and dont expect much from it, then its worth the money"

I bought a Hama Star 42 some years ago, and used it for ages, from my Canon G3, through a 350D, to my recent 30D..and it sufficed. It's only recently I've upgraded to a Manfrotto (Decent) tripod. But the Hama/cheapy did me for a couple of years. The thing is, I didnt use it much, and when I did, i didn't expect it to hold my slr with a nice big hefty lens....

But what if I'd have shelled out 150 quid 4 years ago? I'd still have used it as much...so for the 15 quid it cost me...I think I did well.

If you can afford to go for a better model, then go for it, as you will only eventually end up upgrading in the future anyway....How soon is up to you.
If you can't afford it, then it will do its basic job of helping out with stability, just dont expect it to perform miracles  :)

If you are going to use a camera with a long zoom or telephoto, you have just got to bite the bullet and buy the best you can afford. You then have to do the same with the head.

A good rock solid tripod and head are worth a couple of stops, perhaps more when the light is iffy.

Buy second hand rather than settle for something cheaper.

Hold your fire!

From looking at the picture on the Ebay link, this tripod is indeed the Hama/Star 42. They are currently in Tesco and possibly Argos for £7.50 !!! Save your cash and get one there instead!!!

As a tripod, if you're not gonna use it too much, then it will suffice. I used the one up (63) from this for a few years with a D50 and 300mm lens. It wasn't too bad - but not ideal. Saying that though - it did the job and if money's an issue, it could be worth looking into.

Saying that though, I am now currently upgrading to a Manfrotto 190xPro ;)

Anth.

the one in the original link isnt man enough imho

i bought a velbion tripod off someone on here, new it retails at about £30 and it was utterly useless for putting the camera on, not sturdy and vibrated like crazy making it useless as a tripod, i ended up only using it as a stand for my flash.

cheap price usually means cheap product whcih usually means NFG.

just to rock the boat

I owned a cheap velbon - that's the one that couldn't hold my camera and a small lens. Useless.

very pleased with mine, sturdy!

I find big cheap ones are pretty stable, just big and heavy.

Got a cheap 7dayshop chap and a smaller slik 340 or somit, last week or so when that moony thingy was going on, I used the 7dayshop for the 50-500 10x better than the slik which cost 5x the price. :p

This last edition of 'what digital camera' had a test of a few tripods and one that came out highly reconmended was one by calumet, for wait for it @ £19.99. So needing a one I thought I'd have a go for that one.
It is very stable, very well made, has a good range of height adjustments, comes with a sling bag, spirit level on the head, the only downside is it is quite heavy, but managable. It will quite happily handle just about all slr and lens combos.(apart from that ******* huge Sigma monster from one of the other threads)

The model is the CK6143 the website is www.calumetphoto.co.uk
I would say it is a cracking good buy for less than £20, epsesh if you have a habit of slinging them about!

Cheerz:thumbs:
