It must be a mistake - but then looking at their price for the 17-40L they're massively overcharging there too. have you tried warehouse express, or do you prefer high street? http://www.warehouseexpress.com/

Cheers

Jon

I do prefer the piece of mind I can take it back easy but I had a nice voucher that made it a more friendly price anyway.

But the price on there was £489 only yesterday!

Hmmm someone on here sells lenses sorry forgotten name, someone will help I am sure. I leave that up to matt to buy stuff, but we got a good deal and got to use one of our canon vouchers, made it even cheaper.

Altenatively try Kerso on Ebay or in the members list on here - last I heard he was selling the brand new boxed (nothing dodgy) for £390.

You mean StuvUk (?) ...

:p

Thanks for the suggestions but Jessops were £441 free P&P with the voucher code I had. Until they had this idiotic price change :(

Kerso, that was it, we bought a lens from him, no problems, and money back from voucher. Knew someone would come up with his name. Think Matt contacted him through here the first time round, in a pm.

Thanks Sue I had heard his name a lot around here. I do like local store piece of mind though.

Goodness me, thats the lenses matt bought from kerso, and he would never have got it if it cost that.
Not funny at all, people must be stupid.

Hang on I think Jessops are putting there prices up for Xmas.

Check this and this is way off http://www.jessops.com/Store/s15715...f45-and-56L-USM-Image-Stabilised/details.aspx

That's not even funny!

Do they really think the kind of people that buy these lenses don't research there investment in these expensive lenses? Idiots!

Certainly looks that way :(

Look here Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS L £1699.99  (I bought same lens from them in July for £1306 approx using a 10% discount code CPB10PC)

Guess they are truly showing their festive spirit :nono:

I would try Kerso a lot cheaper and great service, (Ive used him about 4 times)

and dont forget lens's have a worldwide guarantee so Canon UK will honor the warranty

I think this could be some sort of retarded ploy, this way in the January sales they can say "we're slashing prices".
To be honest jacking their prices up will probably lose them more customers on the lead up to christmas than they can make up in the January "sale" :bang:

More likely they are seeing a boom in DSLR sales with Sony taking on the Minolta brand and Canon and Nikon with their very competitive lower models at prices competing with good P&S cameras, they are anticipating a rush on accessories like lenses, flash units etc, and are ready and willing to fleece accordingly :(

I bought a nifty fifty from Kerso a couple of weeks ago no problems and very quick delievery, got to be better than Jessops!

Col M: Agreed!

Warspite: If you are right this would be a pathetic move. Do they think they have the monopoly on the market or something? The kind of people who buy high price lenses such as the ones I have mentioned are the type who will know what they are looking at. Usually If someone starts going elsewhere for there stuff they don't go back.

This is gonna be some idiotic decision from the higher ranks sat in a board room sipping on brandy. People with more Salary than brains thinking they are marketing geniouses without knowing thier target consumers in the pro side of the camera market

Don't kid yourself mate. There's someone at our camera club, must have come into some money and thought photography would be a good hobby to share with her son. One Lowe Pro bag, 30D, Laptop, couple of L lenses and some other gear and she was good to go. Except she didn't know one button from another.

I cant stand Jessops for many different reason but the one that sticks in my mind was when I went to buy from the Merryhill branch.
The guy dropped the lens on the floor, picked it up, blew on it, and proceeded to box it up for me. He seemed genuinely shocked when I said I didnt want it!
Ive bought everything I have from WE. I had a problem with my lights, in that he the bulbs blew on first use, I rang WE & they sent out a new set straight away and and picked up the 'old' set ... no quibbles!

Wow! although they must be a rare breed and have money to throw away

That price is ridiculous ... They will however match the price, so suggest you do that.
I recently had great service through Jessops, so won't knock them for that. Prices are high, but use there pricematch service..

Nope, they've just pulled the plug on it.
Alot of stores are now refusing to price match anything except DSLR's now.

And yep, its a very recent thing. They've only just announced their new policy...didn't take long for them to pull it did it?....

OMG! Even with the 10% discount code, Jessop are charging 0ver 1100 quid more for the 500mm F4L than they charged me just 2 weeks ago! :cuckoo:

Looks like you got the 500mm with perfect timing

Well I was going to order early December. I'm glad I didn't now! That's seriously stupid on Jessops part...just about everyone is miles cheaper than that.

Really - I didnt know what - I'm sure one of the recent mags I picked up still has it listed. Very sneaky if they have mind.

Did I got to far?

Contact email sent to Jessops from me:

Your pathetic price increases on lenses are gonna lose you a lot of revenue this xmas.

What makes your marketing execs think punters are going to pay the hugely increased prices on the popular lenses just because it is xmas I do not know.

The kind of people who invest in these high end lenses do their research. Do you really think you hold the monopoly? Your competitors will wipe the floor with you ths xmas and no one will be fooled by your apparent drop to sale prices come Janurary.

I myself was just about to purchase a £480 lens (which just went up to £610). Certainly not now. I will get it from one of your many competitors.

From what I read on the pro photography forums (of which some hold around tens of thousands of members and counting) I am not alone. One guy was just about to buy a £5000 lenses (500mm L) is now sourcing from else where.

You are going to alienate the big spenders and pros. Most that go else where never come back.

Well done! Nice Move!

Maybe over the top but I just feel patronised and insulted. I just want them to know people arn't that stupid!

LOL. It covers all the bases.

Yup, Jessops is the parent company, they used to even share the same address for their head offices until people cottoned on to the fact, so they changed it to the adjacent street

Thats just amusing.

I am beginning to dislike Jessops more and more I think.

By the way off topic. I notice you have the 85mm 1.8. What do you think of it?

A favourite, second only (perhaps) to my 70-200. It works great for portraits being sharp as it is, fast focusing, large aperture for low light and DoF, well built, quiet, and being 85mm it can get you that little bit closer than the 50mm when shooting people

Basically I cannot fault it and would recommend it to anyone :)

Well in this months Digital Camera mag the Jessops ad states.
DID YOU KNOW JESSOPS WILL BEAT INTERNET PRICES
"We aim to be unbeatable, but if you see any product we sell at an online or UK high street competitor, we will give you 110% of the difference if you buy it from us."

Yup, that was the campaign. Very recently done too. Word is,
they've already pulled the plug on it.

Unfortunately, they are entitled to :(

TBH I think it's alot of the left arm not knowing what the right arm is doing, and the head not talking to the arse.
Some stores are happily still adhering to the campaign, others are refusing point blank, citing that it's now ended again. (Even after phone calls to head office).

I can understand you wanting the peace of mind of being able to return it easily Sie, but have a look at Warehouse Express. They've reduced the 500L by 200 quid since I was looking round, and I've found their customer service first class. When I had a problem with the 1D, they had it picked up by courier from me the following day - minimum hassle. AJ Purdey are pretty good too.

When I'm buying substantial items on line I look for a site where you can actually ring up and speak to someone which is the case with WE and Purdey.

Yes I am seriously looking at warehouse express now. I may never go back to Jessops to be honest just out of spite. Although I have found myself reconsidering the 70-200 now (see recent post) :)

Why not look at importing from the USA.

I have just looked at prices from B&H in New York, and the total cost including shipping at today's exchange rate would be £311.

You would have to check up on import duty of course.

I did this because I'm looking for a flash and £207 for a 580EX looks quite good :)

Arn't there return issues with imported lenses as in Canon UK won't even look at a Canon US lens e.t.c

According to the B&H site if you buy a USA product they come with a world wide warranty

A "USA" warrantied item is a manufacture's warranty that would be repaired by any manufacturer's authorized service facility worldwide if the item required in-warranty service. A "direct import" item would have to be returned to B&H Photo-Video Corp. in New York City if it required in-warranty attention. A resident of the USA may wish to make the buying decision based on price, since the cost of shipping to an American service center or to us should be about equal. A non-USA resident may want to consider the cost of returning the "direct import" item to us for warranty service, compared to the expense of buying the "USA warrantied" item and having warranty service available locally.
