Yes
I have resisted for so long (as tbh my skills are not really going to do the glass justice) but...

I am seriously looking at the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Lens.

I have a tamron lens that covers the 18-70 range at F2.8 which I am very happy with but need something a bit longer. I already have a 28-200 but its not a great lens and was wondering what people on here thought.

I have noticed a few of these lenses on ebay at about the £260 - 280 mark and have an itchy mouse button.

Am I going to want to ditch all my other lenses in favour of L glass once I take the plunge and is my credit card going to hate me forever? Or will the descent into insolvency (but with nice lenses) be a more gradual process?

whoops and the real question

is the L glass at £280 a good buy?

I bought the same lens 70-200L f4 about a month ago - love it. The colour, clarity and sharpness is superb - I dithered for ages about buying it - glad I did. I bought new from Kerso for £340 :) GO FOR IT!! :D

I will say that if you are shooting wildlife, that at the long end you will need a tripod as there is a bit of camera shake - that's just my opinion.

I bought the IS version from Kerso last week for £609. Awesome piece of kit, an well worth the money.

You can't be talking brand new surely.

Even second hand its a steal, One of the sharpest lenses in Canon's line-up..

Don't hesitate, Just buy it at that price subject to it working 100%.:woot:

I will second that, im assuming it will be second hand at that price also. Its a cracking lens, I have a friend who has one and hes gets some very nice images from it. Go for it

The 70-200 f/4 will be the best value for money you'll ever get for the duration of your hobby.

i have that lens.very sharp.great lens,
buy it. you will not regret it:thumbs:

I bought this lens second hand a couple of years ago for £300 - it's a great bargain. Light enough to use for a whole football match (500-750 pics) without noticing, but really sharp. It's half the weight of the IS lenses at approx 700g. That also makes a difference when walking as I will pack it in my backpack.

However - it's an addictive drug. Once you see the sharpness and that 'zing' that you get with L glass, there's no going back.

as byker says, once you get your 1st 'L', you'll want more, i'm after a 100-400L next after i got my 70-200 F4 L (after i buy my sigma 10-20 anyway)

I've just bought the 100-400 off irritable rabbit.
A really nice, crisp lens, the IS helps, but boy do you notice the weight difference after 90 mins. :D

I think it's a little long for my sunday football, but should be great for the motorsport.

This was taken Sunday, just cropped,

Maybe, post the links so people can check for you. It seems a little cheap so they might be a scam, but difficult to judge that on price alone though.

But if genuine then it is an excellent price and most definitely worth it. Even if you can afford full price from somewhere like Kerso it would be worth it.

There is a lot of hype when it comes to 'L' lenses and you sometimes see ludicrous suggestions that people spend thousands when they only want to snap their kids in the garden.

But the 70-200mm f/4 is an exception because it is not too far removed in price with the £350-odd decent 70-300mm consumer zooms and the superior quality is worth loosing the extra 100mm.

And with a 1.4x teleconvertor (from £90 for a Kenko one from HK) you will get 280mm f/5.6 anyway, which will be no slower at the long end than those consumer zooms.

Michael.
