Thinking of Upgrading

I haven't been taking too many picture lately, as I've been travelling a lot with work (nowhere photogenic), however my first child arrived earlier this week and I haven't had my camera (Olympus E420) off my neck.

However I've never been happy with the lack of accessories for the Olympus, and that coupled with the lack of any stabilisation in the camera has made me think about saving for an upgrade.

Part of me says I should look at the E620, but that doesn't get around the lack of acessories for the Olympus, while the other part says ditch the Oly (as I haven't invested too much thus far) and go for something from Canon or Nikon.

If I could find one at the right price I'd love a 40D, but then there are all of the newer models with built in video, decisions decisions

Any thoughts / suggestions?

Congrats for the birth of your first child

Obviously depends on your budget as to what you buy, you mention the 40D and it is a belter of a Camera, don't forget though, you will need lenses - the 50 1.8 can be got new from Kerso on here for around £75.

Before you make the decision, do you have any friends / family that have DSLR's - might be worth having a try of theirs to see how it feels to you and don't forget the benefits of being able to borrow a lens if you get the same make. Otherwise pop into a local camera shop and have a play with several different makes & models as this may help make your mind up what you do or don't want.

In the Canon range, there is also the 450D if you don't need video function or the 500D or new 550D if you do - I've no experience with these re the video function, so I'm not sure of ease and quality.

Good luck with your search and all the best for the future

What accessories do you think you need? I think it would be smart to create a list of them, including those you might want to get later and compare prices and useful features of those for Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Sony and Pentax. Don't forget to include third party manufacturers such as Sigma, they might be good enough for you. I wouldn't get a Sony because I can't stand their support website, but if you think you won't need that site, it might be worth considering.

There are some 4/3 lenses by Leica that have optical stabilisation, but they aren't cheap.

I suppose the biggest factor is the lack of Image Stabilisation. Which became evident when I looked at some shots I took on holiday and compared them to those taken by my friend with his 450D and Canon IS lenses. His were much sharper.

Funding wise I can spend around £400-£450 on a new (or used) camera body and then some more on lenses but don't know which route to go?

Obviously if I upgrade but stick with an Olympus I can reuse my existing lenses, but I did like the feel of the Canon 450D when I had a play and have heard great things about the 40D (don't know much about Nikon)?!?

Thoughts appreciated.

The performance of the 40D at low light levels is impressive - it handles noise really well. Tie a 50mm f/1.8 onto the front and you're onto a winning combination without even having to think about IS.

/edit Oh, yeah and get the beta of Lightroom 3 and all your noise worries are gone for good anyway.

Check out the oly e-600 @ currys selling for just under £300, this is basically a e-620

Upgrade the oly body, get a 4/3rds - OM adapter and use 2nd hand OM lenses unless AF is very important to you? I use a few on my Canon 5DII, and the quality is certainly on a par with the 'L' series lenses if you get the right ones, so they should certainly be OK for the little 4/3rds sensor...
