thinking of upgrading, what would you do?

Yes
OK so I'm hoping to get together about £1000 so spend on upgrading. That includes selling my 550d but keeping my sigma 70-200.

The issues I have at the moment are really around AF speed so I want to make sure that is sorted and I'm assuming the body is going to help with that. The other issue is around 70-200 not being long enough but I can't see myself being able to do anything about that in the short term.

So I'm thinking either a 7d or a 1d MK3 - although I think I might still be a few hundred quid short for the MK3.

Other thoughts were go for a 50d and then upgrade my lens....

Any suggestions?

Or you could get a propper camera

hehe only joking - cant help on the canon stuff, makes my skin blister, but a good body upgrade is worthwhile, sure the guys will help out soon ;)

33 minutes, surprised it took so long.:D

seriously though I'm not tied other than I would have to sell the sigma and my 550d, kit lens and 50mm.

What would the equivalent be from the Nikon camp? D300s? I've seen them for around the 850 mark. Assume I could pick up a sigma 70-200 for same as the canon equivalent.

Unless you go down the branded route - you will always get 2nd best, Sigma are a good lens with reasonable af speed, maybe look at getting a canon lens for a weekend to see if that helps. £50 now could save you more in getting things you might not need ;)

I prefer the 1D MKIII over the 7D, the focus speed is better. The good thing about the 7d is it gives more reach.

Advantages and disadvantages (I've got both cameras):

7D:
Far greater ability to crop due to file size
1.6 v 1.3 crop factor for FoV
Better AF system

1D3:
Faster fps (2 fps do make a difference in sport)
More robust body and shutter life
Dual CF & SD cards
Larger sensor
More flexible configuration (ISO Aperture & Shutter Speed limits, variable fps etc etc)
Better all round camera

It's a really tough call between the two, and comes down to your shooting style in the end. Both will be a huge learning curve from the 550D, and both will give a lot of pleasure and fantastic images once you've got to grips with them.

Thanks Mark. One of my thoughts is that I get a 7d and any spare cash goes towards upgrading my sigma 70-200 to a canon 70-200L.

When you say it 'comes down to my shooting style' what do you mean?

I would say get the Mark III, I've used both and infact and I sold my 7d because I didn't think the AF was anywhere near as good as the 1 series cameras.

Phil - was there a particular reason for selling the 7D?

1D MKIII seems to be winning the vote, doesn't win in the wallet though....

If the budget is tight maybe consider a 1DmkII - excellent AF, 1d build quality and very cheap at the moment. The batteries are huge, heavy and drain fast, only 8mpix (I think) and high iso isn't great, but they were widely used just a few years back and still take lovely pictures.

thanks for the input guys.

I guess one of the issues I thought I might have with getting a MK3 is reach. I've only got a sigma 70-200 at the moment so if i go to a MK3 with a 1.3x crop factor from a 1.6x on the 7d would I then be thinking I really need a longer lens? (I think that anyway but it may be more of an issue...)
