Hi Everyone,

For the last couple of years i have been using my nikon D40x which has served me well. The issue i have with this camera is that i get quite a lot of noise if i'm shotting using a ISO setting of 400 or above. 400 is ok but 800 and above and the noise is really noticeable.

I would also like some better auto focusing capability but i think this will come with a new body anyway.

I was thinking of upgrading to the D200 but am wondering if, first, does this have better ISO shooting or are there any other camera's worth looking at.

The camera must be a nikon and work with my 18-200mm VR, 50mm (body needs to have the drive motor) and my sb-600 (this should work on any nikon)

Really i need the new body to be able to auto focus my 50mm as i almost spent £180 on the new 1.4f 50mm just so it would work on the d40x

Would probably buy the camera second hand and be looking to spend around the £300 mark but could go higher if its worth it.

Thanks in advance.

How about a D90? If you want lower noise at higher ISO's it has the same sensor as the D300, I think it satisfies your other requirements too... will stretch the budget a bit though.

Both the D80 and D200 will be good upgrades to your D40x, both will AF with screw drive lenses and the D200 will meter with old non CPU lenses as well. One problem is that both these cameras use basically the same 10MP CCD sensor as the D40x, so high ISO noise charcateristics are going to be similar.
To get better high ISO noise handling, you really need to go up to the 12Mp CMOS sensor as used in the D5000, D90 and D300(s). The D5000 does not have in body focus motor, so the D90 is your best option.
