Thinking of upgrading from the Canon 1000D

Hello everybody

I've had a Canon 1000D/Rebel XS for around 2 and a half years. It was the first digital SLR I ever owned. I do photography as a hobby and I like to think I've learnt and improved my skills on the 1000D. I did a lot of travel photography this year and even had my work exhibited last month. I feel it's time I graduated from the 1000D.

Whenever I mention this to people, they tell me not to bother because the 1000D is more than adequate. They tell me: "it's all about the glass".

Whilst I strongly agree that the lens is always important, I really would like to try a new camera I think. I'm just wondering what would be enough of a "worthy" upgrade for me to make. What camera will make a big enough difference to me and my photos. A semi pro model perhaps. Around the £1000 mark.

What do you think?

thanks a lot.

Sounding boringly like other people, I have to say that the quality of the lenses makes more impact more of the time than does the body. That said, you haven't said what lenses you do, in fact, have. Go on, tell us... we might be able to make some really sensible suggestions, then.

lol...sure. :) I don't really have anything too spectacular, I don't think...

Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8

Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS

Tokina 12-24mm PRO DX

Sigma 17-70 mm DC 2.8-4.5

I have absolutely no idea about camera prices, but I can say that, years ago, I went from a 300D to a 20D and the presence of the control wheel on the back of the camera was, if not a God-send, then, at least, a massive boon.

I must now lie down in a darkened room and replenish my supplies of commas.

60D might be worth a look, although if you travel a lot you might get fed up lugging it around (not that it's THAT big!).

I have a 400D (I think ;)) so am also using a basic end Canon. In what arena do you photograph? What does the 1000D not do that you need/want?

If it was all about the glass there would be no 5d 7d 550d 600d ..the 1000d would be fine and we would not need to upgrade ... But that's not how things work and we improve things hopfully ..I just had the 1000d for about 4 or 5 months and it was a great camara but I thought it did not take as great a shot as I wanted so I have got a 600d coming in the morn . I like macro photography so hopefully going up to 18 megapixels will improve my shots with my canon 100 mm lens I may be wrong but I think most on here would rather have a 600d than the 1000d ..

I'd go up to a 60D or push the boat out and get a 7D that way your up to the latest with body technology in your price range and all your lenses will fit.

The lenses you have are all reasonable and will carry you forwards. You can then concentrate on glass knowing you have a body to stand behind whetever you get.

There is always the second hand route through places like MPB where you could get second hand with a limited warranty. I got my 1d3 that way as a Canon refurb and it's absolutely minty.

Just gone from a 450D to a 60D and well worth the jump, so i would go for that or the 600D, both will give you the option of wireless flash from out of the box. Better low ISO usage, to name a few. Unless your going to be shooting sports the 7D would be a bit over kill, but a fantastic camera if you want to splash the cash. All share the same sensor.

I've got a 60D and a 1000D and there's a massive difference :) You will get a much nicer feeling body, an extra control wheel, top LCD, way bigger viewfinder, better AF performance, video features and much better high ISO capability.

That said, the 100D is still a very capable body.

It's more than enough for most situations in comparison to other crop cameras, but I'd say if you're going to consider upgrading to a 5D classic. Incredible noise performance as a part of being full frame, opens up a lot of creative DoF potential. Sell the 17-70 and 18-135, get a 28-135 IS as a walkabout or if you're happy with the 50 1.8 as a walkabout (bear in mind it's a standard lens on full frame), pick up a more specialised lens
