For a while now i have been desperate to get my hands on a canon 24-105 but im unfortunately never in a financial position to buy one without having conflict with the wife! I currently have a old 28-135 that i always seem to end up using while the 70-200 sits on the shelf, but this is purely due to focal range that I require at present! Now obviously as people are probably well aware of, is the 28-135 is worth diddly so will never see any reason to move on. But at the mo im seriously thinking about selling the 70 to fund the 24 but do not want any regrets! ! So was really just after some thoughts on what to do?
Currently shooting with a 5d2

The 24-105 is an old lens and an average lens. Surprised Canon haven't replaced it by now.

Lol ahhhh that doesn't help

As these things go, the 24-105L is not a particularly old lens, and it's certainly a lot better than average. I'd say it's actually very good, if not quite the best in class optically (that's the extremely sharp 24-70 Mk2) and it's very versatile.

Since it was launched, Canon has introduced the 24-70/2.8L Mk2, 24-70/4L IS, and recently the 24-105/3.5-5.6 IS STM. That's the one I'd go for if the L version is out of budget, it's about £200 cheaper. Review http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-STM-Lens.aspx

Thanks for the link. But unfortunately will not tempt me away from the L!
Maybe i should just raid the piggy bank!!

Sort of depends who's using it, i found mine to be great and if i still had a FF body i would be keeping it.

Does that mean you have one for sale?

Before I bought my Canon 6D and 24-105 package last year I had read some forum posts similar to this and was disappointed there were no Canon 24-70 F4 IS kits available when I ordered. Having used the 24-105mm F4 I'd say it is easily as sharp as the Canon 17-55mm F2.8 which people rave about. I think the problem is with the 24-105 F4 is it gets compared to the 24-70 F2.8 II which is sharper, but it is also over double the price - so not a fair comparison!

Get the Canon 24-105 and you will be happy.

Rob check out Harrisons second hand sale they had one for £500 used 12 months warranty. My mate has this lens and loves it

....or perhaps privately on here for about £425 or so?.....I used one on my 1 Dx till I got a 24-70 2.8 mk2, and found the image quality to be very satisfactory.

If it were me, that's what I'd do!!

edit...just seen one in ex condition sold on here for £350?...keep your eyes open!!;)

This is probably too late but there really isn't any point in having both the 28-135 and the 24-105. The 24 is shorter but significantly better than the 28 which doesn't offer enough on the long end to justify keeping it I've always been surprised at the criticism levelled at the 28-135 which is a decent lens even if it is now pretty long in the tooth. At the price they go for now they're very good value and a good step up. If you still have it you may as well sell it and put whatever you can get towards something else, the 24-105 if you're still thinking and you wouldn't have any regrets unless you're desperate to shoot in the lost 30mm slot.
