I used to have an A4 Epson Stylus 950, but this printer died and went to the scrap heap many moons ago! It's therefore been a very long time since I have been able to do any home printing and I am completely out of touch with what's on the market. I have done loads of searches, but still have no clear idea as to what to go for. I want to go up to an A3+ format, and I print mostly for camera club competitions and my own walls.

Initial cost is not an issue (it's going to be a special pressie), but running costs are obviously going to be a factor. I like to print mono from time to time, and from my searches it seems you have to change inks and waste a lot with some printers.

Any suggestions?

If running costs are important then stick to epson and get a CIS or if you got an R3000 you can get decent 3rd party carts.

I run an epson R2400 with a fotospeed CIS and it saved me over 1k in ink costs in the first year and that included buying the system.

Although slightly bigger (A2) the Epson 3880 is the bees knees.

Running costs are quite reasonable if you are selling prints at a decent markup.
Each cartridge (there are 8 of them) cost between £50-£60 depending where you go.
As far as quality is concerned there is little competition.

I have an Epson 1400 which produces great results with compatible cartridges fron internet-ink.co.uk

Hi Carole,

I have the Epson R2880 and it's quality is superb. Bought from Calumet, who are competitive on price and gave a demo of both the Canon and Epson printers before I ordered. I use only genuine inks and never switch off.

Quick question - are the printers mentioned (Epson r3000 and canon pixma 9000) suitable for sporadic use, ie weeks between use.

And will using a CIS help or hinder?

if you are only using is spordically then there would be no real need for a CIS

you don't get a CIS for the R3000 but you get high quality 3rd party refilable carts
