I want to get into club & event photography. I have a Canon 550D - 18-55mm lens and the Canon 50mm 1.8

Obviously because of the crop factor the 50mm isn't easy to work with.

I'm thinking of getting the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and pairing it with a Yonguo YN560 (cant afford the 580ex) and using that as my main set up in a club setting?

Is that suitable set up? Will the YN560 do the job? Anyone have any experience with it?

NIGHTCLUBS I mean btw

As long as you're happy working with manual flash it will do the job perfectly. If you want to retain e-ttl have a look at Nissin flashes.

I'm not familiar with the flashguns but have used the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and own a 50mm f1.4 which I love.

There are sometimes focusing issues with large aperture Sigma lenses which can be compensated for with microfocus which the 550d does not have. Our 50mm f1.4 is pretty useless above f4 on our 450d but stunning on our 50d with microfocus adjusted.

I'd reccomend research on the 1.4 re the focus before buying and if there are focus issues perhaps collect and try at a dealer like Microglobe where I recently tried both a Tamron 28-75mm and a Canon 24-70mm and to my delight could see no difference in these lenses on a crop sensor ignoring the extreme corners, shooting into strong light sources, and at the settings (f4 -f8) required for studio portraits under strobes thereby saving £600!

Excellent, good value flashes for manual use. I've got two which have proved faultless.

I have both the YN560 and the YN-460II and both are excellent value. You may also be wanting to look the the YN-462 which retains e-ttl.

For nightclub photogaphy you dont need a huge aperture... f4 would be plenty IMO. Use the flash to light your subject. F1.4 would cause most of the image to be out of focus due to the narrow depth of field. A good lens to get might be the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or personally I use the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4. In a club prime lenses may not provide the flexibilty for the varying subject distance that a zoom would.

From what I can see the YN467 only has auto zoom not manual zoom and the 468 is for Canon only. Am I wrong?

You didn't say anything about manual zoom, but yes auto only. I haven't had any dealings with YongNuo for a while, I just assumed they would have brought the Nikon version out by now....

I've just been looking at the YN560 as a cheap option for an extra flash but really I'd want to get one with iTTL and the ability to manually zoom the flash.

You numpty

I googled it and people were saying in April 2010 that a Nikon version should be launched in May 2010 but I can't see any available anywhere so I assume it was never made available which is a shame.

Id be more interested in getting an autofocus assist lamp feature personally. Id save for a 430exII.

I have the 467, there IS manual zoom (rubbish interface but it's there) on Nikon only. There wasn't a Nikon 468 in Jan when I was buying, and not seen any announcements on my various tog blog subscriptions.

467 is okay, bit down on power, the wide angle flappy panel thing is delicate (ie I broke mine of very easily by accident). No complaints about TTL exposure however. Also has a full complement of modes TTL/M/S1 and S2. Recharge using vapextech instant 2300 is pretty fast but then even at 1/1 it's only about GN20 @ ISO100 so it's not using that much juice. - This won't/shouldn't be an issue in a club due to the distance to subject being so short.

The 46x line YN flashes have a basic LED AF assit lamp, pretty bright too, mines a touch off centre however.
