Hi all,
I have found out i have a wee bit of money coming to me in the next couple of months and was thinking of getting a new DSLR while i have the cash sitting.

I am thinking of either the Canon 50D (in which i get to keep the lenses i have) or the Nikon D300.

I am loving the landscape and portraits stuff so was wondering if anybody could shed there thoughts on the 2 cameras.

The reason i am thinking of an upgade is it will be with me for a few years.

Thanks folk.

with the lenses that are in your camera bag then its down to preference of body. the lenses will be worth all of 100 quid ish. what do you lack and feel you need to upgrade with the current camera. i think you willk see a bigger improvement with better glass.

Keep the body, but do it a favour and buy some decent lenses. 50D needs good glass to get the best from its 15mp. D300 requires a complete new set of lenses.

If you like landscapes and portraits how about something like a 17-40L & 85mm f1.4 or a 24-70 f2.8 or a 24-105L f4 IS or a UWA such as a Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22

Hi,

I have just looked at your camera bag in your profile and to be honest you need better lenses not a new body.

Try to decided what you want to shoot and then buy the correct lens for the job.

All the best.

Yeah well i see where you's are coming from with the lenses but the reason i want to get the body is it will have everything i will need and more and then i have a system with a good start to build on, or am i wrong.

To be honest i just bought the 400d to get me back as it's all i could afford at that time but i plan to stick about now and would like the basis for a good setup.

I know my lenses at the moment are a bit naff but they do what i need at the moment(i think) and i was planning to build on them through time when i get my head round the whole photography thing.

But if you's think i should go the lens way i might need to have a re-think.

Cheers, Kev

Glass first, then bodies. If you got a 50D now, your lenses wouldn't do them justice. Consider a used 30D or a new/used/refurb 40D but good glass makes a bigger difference than a body upgrade. Landscapes and Portraits is 5D territory anyway

Ok i will take all this into my thoughts over this.

I should mention i was going to buy the body with a lens anyway. I have noticed both the Canon and the Nikon come with some lens choice in a kit also not sure what i would do in the lens options here.

Thanks.

You'd probably just get the same 18-55 or similar to what you've already got. I'd improve on the lenses first too, and get some experience using them.

You get the 17-85mm IS or the 18-200mm IS. I can only see this option.
I am going to look into the lens side of it and see if this could be an option.

The only thing is i have a budget to stick to and not sure which lens i would get but i will have a look into it.

Go the lens route. This will expand your photo options far more than any new camera, and on a limited budget there is no compelling reason to switch to Nikon.

Which lenses to get? Now there's a more difficult question - you are truly spoilt for choice :)

Richard.

Thanks Richard i am def going to look into the lens.

Something else that made me want the camera was the size of the 400d it's a bit small for my hands and is a bit uncomfy for me, though i would imagine a battery grip would help this.

Before deciding if you want to jump ship to Nikon go and try a D300 out, Canons and Nikons are completely different in the way they feel and handle and you might find you're more comfortable with one over the other.

If you want a shot of a D300 to see how you get on pm me and you can try mine

Cheers for the offer.
I am heading into jessops in the morning so i am going to see if they will give me a hold of both just to see how they feel as i never done this with the 400d.

Thanks though, Kev

No probs - always worth trying before buying. Initially I thought a Nikon D40 would have been fine for me until I tried that and realised it was just too small to be comfortable. If I'd bought mail order without trying I'd have been kicking myself...

Yeah well thats what i done seems silly now.
I did have the d80 before the 400d and sold it for some silly reason but thats just me.lol:bang:

If you've had a D80 then the D300 feels pretty similar, just a bit bigger and a lot sturdier

Hope the trip to Jessops went well.If you are set on getting a new body then why not go for the 40D ? With the cash you save you could get the 17-85mm and 50mm f/1.8 lenses as well and still have change.Just a thought.
Cheers.
