Hey all, i used to shoot all canon (350d,30d,50d) and switched to a Nikon d300s as i had been having focus issues and i had no paid photoshoots left to do so no back up stuff needed.
Im loving the nikon d300s's focus (wow) but i find it really hard to use, everything is backwards and i had a great fast workflow down but due to the colours of the nikon im having to change that too. Ive also been asked to help shoot 6-12 weddings (with a pro photog) later in the summer and i dont want to go into those jobs without back ups or confidence in my gear.

So my options are sell the d300s and buy 2 d90's
or
sell all my nikon gear and re invest in canon, im thinking 2 40d with 17-55 f2.8is and a 50mm f1.4 prime.

Please give me your feedback

Im not really sure what you mean but i feel i really got on with the canon system, knew when to over and under exposure it, knew what it needed in pp for it to look better etc it was just my in focus percentage was very low, could have been me, the glass, the bodies who knows all i know is that i made the switch and its like starting all over again.

I'm assuming the 7D wasn't out as that would have been the logical step?

Not sure I follow the logic of D90- the AF is not as good as the D300/s and the controls will still not be the same as Canon so I don't see what problem you're solving- why not just get another D300s?

If you really can't get used to Nikon and don't think changing all your PP is worth it then going back to Canon is probably your best option.
Personally I would get a 7D and perhaps a 40D or even 30D as back up just in case. The 7D should solve your focus issues you had- especially if your not using kit lenses.

Thanks dr o, the d90 thing was if i stick with the nikon system i can get 2 d90's for the price of a d300s Backup.
My heart wants to go back to canon where i was comfy !!
but my heads say nikon.

Im normally not a gear head but this is driving me nuts.

If you were sticking with Nikon, I'd be tempted to buy a second hand D90 as a back up- similar controls to the D300s and if it's just a back up then having 2 cameras of the same model is not really required especially when they are so close in terms of button layout- it's not like D3000 and D300S.

Maybe rent a 7D and see what you think or borrow one.

If you in focus rate has dramatically improved then maybe the Nikon is a better fit but it's hard to say without lots more detail- we both know Canon's work- every now and again anyway:lol:

We all have a different experience when using a particular camera, so it's impossible to make universal recommendations. You are unique and what matters is how a camera feels and behaves in your hands. From what you say it appears that you prefer everything about Canon except the focusing. With that in mind it may well make sense to return to Canon. I find it hard to believe that a top marque like Canon would be unable to focus satisfactorily at a wedding and I assume there must be various focusing options and a degree of customization available. It's probably just a case of fine-tuning the camera to your way of working, or revising your own focus ing technique.

Whatever solution you choose, I hope it works for you.

my feedback? just forget about different cameras, keep the d300s and enjoy it and take many pictures. it's a very capable camera. if you need a second body get a used d90 or similar..

but i find it really hard to use, everything is backwards

What exactly do you mean by this?

If you mean that the +/- wheels for exposure compensation and various adjustments is back to front then I you can swap that around (and also switch the operation of the main and sub dials)... at least you can on the D90.
NIKON uses + to mean you need to ADD exposure not that it is over exposed like most other brands, but you can change this in the settings.

If I am barking up the wrong tree I apologise...

Good luck with your decision (but I wouldn't defect to the dark side :-) )

Think the key to this is confidence or more to the point your lack of
Most things in life rely on that key factor and sounds like it won't be restored until you get back to what you know.

Doesn't matter if it seems trivial, no different to a snooker player using a new cue, no doubt all fine for the job, but its how you feel that makes the difference

This is supposed to be fun and all these nagging doubts seem to be spoiling it for you, so if you have the cash go for it and don't look back.

Not sure where you live, but if its anywhere near me you are welcome to give my 40D and 17-55 a go and see if it really does feel right again.

I think that is the point. He is not enjoying using the nikon system, not because the camera is inferior but because he is used to canons ergonomics and quirks.

OP, if having these problems is a barrier to you having fun and enjoying your photography and you can't see time getting you over the problem, change back to canon. If it's just a matter of time and familiarity, keep with what you have!

You have a lot of reason to come back to canon but if your primary subject matter is weddings and portraits Nikon excels in these areas. Had you said sports and wildlife the 7D in the semi pro line up. I would not trade my 7D for any Nikon bodies but have to admit the low light capabilities of Nik are beyond what I can do with my 7D. The 7D is a 100 times better than mt 400D was though

Out of interest, what is it about Nikon colour and the PP side of things that you're finding hard to work with? Is it an issue to do with presets within software (what software do you use?) not giving the results with a Nikon file that it did with a canon one?

Try 5d + 7D combo, or even 1D mkIII - all great tools. It is possible to get used to Nikon so you could look at D80 / 200 backup should you decided to have another go. I personally find Nikon shape and layout not as good as Canon. I am not sure about colours - what software do you use? Lightroom 3 should manage it quite well.

Many thanks to all of you for your replys, i will take everything you have said on board.
Do i need two bodys ? not really as im shooting with someone else but i would feel a bit of a pratt if my camera went down and coundnt shoot anything.
I think my issue with pp and colours are i use lightroom and photoshop and have my own presets set up for the files from my canon equipment and they dont work right with the Nikon files, colour wise there is a difference.
I think just as i need to spend many more hours with my camera i need to do the same with my software just as i did when i got the canon gear.

tijuana taxi hit the nail on the head, with my canon equipment i could go into any situation and shoot without thinking, now with the nikon my head is in the technical side and not the creative side.

Im sure i will get it, i know the d300s is a great camera and is capable of great things i just need to learn how to unlock them.

Many thanks again for your replys

scott.
