Just put up my thoughts on using (or not!) an iPad for sports togging on the blog.

Aside from being a shameless blog plug, I thought you guys might be interested just in case you were attempting some shameless spousal iPad purchase justification :D. Just make sure she (or he!) doesn't read it. Also its kinda quiet on here at the moment - lots of readers, few writers, so hopefully this will stave off some boredom.

Interesting stuff Tobers.

Mine is a very similar experience - fantastic for holiday uploading etc but pants when you are processing lots of images in a short timescale.

TBH it does every other job superbly - I wouldnt be without mine. Dang its sexy! :D

Good post. I also co-erced myself into shelling out for one with the promise that I would use it to display pictures to clients right away.

Unfortunately the hoops you need to go through make continuing to use a laptop the easier option.

Don't get me wrong, for 80% of tasks I find it far better to use than a laptop. That last 20% means it'll never be a standalone device for photography unfortunately.

Love the insight Tobers  a really great read :), I have to say though that anyone who uses Apple products would realise that no way on Heavens Earth would Apple endanger there Pro spec laptop sales etc by making the Ipad on a par with them?. I applaud your inventivness but I think the Apple guys got there first:p. Kind regards Graham

Tobers, I've got a 64gb wi-fi version and I use Photo-Sort for viewing my photos, I've currently got about 5000 arranged in order using folders and sub folders

Top level folder is 2010, then sub folders called sport, family, clients, in the sport I've got sub folders named, Pro rugby league, amateur rl, cricket, etc, etc

Then in the pro rl folder I've got separate folders named after each game I've covered and so and so on.

Photo sort is great but you have to import photos from Ipad photo app individually, takes about 1 minute to import about 100 photos or as fast as you can tap the screen

You can then safely delete your photos from the photos app and it leaves the ones in Photo sort intact.

£1-19 for photo sort and worth it just for the creation of sub folders

I also upgraded my 3 dongle for free to a Mi-Fi so I now have my own 3G wireless hotspot wherever I go so no need to pay the extra £100 for the 3G iPad

I did this also - can be used anywhere but more importantly means you don't have a stupid flimsy piece of plastic waiting to get broken!

Jings - the author of photo-editing app Filterstorm just got in touch with a few corrections which I've put into the post. Looks like he's got quite a lot of things in the pipeline to improve the app.

Ta for the Photo-Sort app tip - I'll have a look at that.

PS - I just realised how colour coordinated the pic of Habana is with the black and white of the lenses. I'd like to think it was intentional!

Good article. I'm tempted by an iPad, but at 64gb i think I'll overtake that capacity quickly. I'm an amateur who likes to have all their pics with them - which I try to do with the iphone.

As a mac user who uses Aperture 3, you can seamlessly sync by album, event, places, people etc. I typically set up smart albums such as "contains geotag = true" or "contains name = true". It's probably a quite expensive portable picture frame, but fingers crossed for a 128gb version in the new year and I think that's more of my salary lining my Jobs' pocket...

Great article Tobers. Not shelled out on one yet but had a feeling it's main use for us lot would be displaying afterwards rather than editing.

I won't mention the next model likely having double the resolution :D

And double the price

I splashed out and bought one and I must say that I'm really pleased with it. Bit of a pain uploading folders and files but clients are definately impressed when you show them images on it.

Interesting article, just how I expected to find it, thanks for doing the all important testing to see if it was capable.

Photomechanic/Lightroom for tablet devices, thats what we need.

I'm holding out for some of the Android based tablets (If I can wait that long...)
I'd love to have on as a portable portfolio for clients etc.

It's worth having a look at this: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-10055-10851

It's a demo of an iPad app called Shuttersnitch which links up to an EyeFi card in your camera to zap pics straight onto an iPad.

Now I've been thinking about an EyeFi card for a remote goal camera (no waiting until half time to collect the pics), but I'd link that into my laptop. This iPad app could be interesting for others though.
