Thinking about a wide angle lens

Hello,

Currently got a canon 400d with 18-55 kit, 50mm f1.8 and a sigma 28-300 f3.5-6.3.

Had a play last night taking images to compare the quality of the lenses. My finding were the sigma is poor throughout the range, kit is much better and the 50mm is a different league.

So back to the title of the thread. I would like a wide angle lens (guessing prime is best) that has the sharpness of the 50mm f1.8.

Planning on selling the sigma so budget is around £150-£200.

Any suggestions?

i went down the same route ! sigma 10-20 is around 450 new i think ? i picked one up for a little over £200 2nd hand on gumtree, amazing lens just about on my camera all the time !

Tokina 11-16... can say its a good lens. But as you've posted you want a prime - guessing around the 12mm mark? Or normal wide around 20mm?

Not sure of prices tho - probably out of budget for AF.

You could look at the older m42 type lenses - there 's one on ebay now :
Asahi Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 20mm f4.5 M42
but its at the upper end of your budget already.

Oh have a search under m42 18mm - there is one on there currently 99p... Might be worth it if it goes cheap as a try out lens?

Depends how wide you want to go.
Your kit goes to 18mm so do you need wider? or would 20 or 24 or 28 do you?

Sorry but no wide angle will be as sharp as the 50mm prime and no wide angle is sub £200. Used the best buy is the Sigma 10-20mm, around £270, a decent lens and you should get good results from it, i.e its perfect sharp enough.

Thats not entirely true. You can pick up a Samyang 14mm for about £250 - and resolution/IQ wise it will blow the Sigma, Tokina and Canon equivalents out of the water.

It is an entirely manual lens though so if you don't know what you are doing then its not going to be an enjoyable lens to use!

If you're not worried about/or can cope with barreling and on a budget the 17-40 f4 is an affordable lens. There is usually one listed on the classifieds for little bit more than the budget you mentioned but not a lot more. For the money you can not beat it. Requires long shutter speeds and tripod with 400D and low light as the 400D ISO gives up early.

If 24mm is in the frame, you might look at the Olympus OM 24mm f/2.8.

Manual focus and you'll have to use stop-down metering, but if it's for landscapes that may not be such an issue.

It's decent enough to make a good showing against the Canon 24mm f/1.4L and Nikon 17-35mm AFS f2.8 in this comparative test

They seem to be going for around £120 on eBay. An AF confirm OM to EOS adapter will set you back £10-£20.

The OM 21mm f/3.5 is a wider option, but rather more expensive, IRO £260 to £290 on eBay.

Look first of all John you are going to be very hard pressed to find a wide-angle with the same quality as your 50 1.8 - without spending A LOT of money- wide angle lenses are hard to make.

Also 24mm isn't wide on a crop sensor like yours. Multiply it by 1.6.

You will want an ultra-wide angle most probably.

If you wan't to go wide, then go W....I....D....E.

Don't ponce about with anything above 11mm.:nono:

IMVHO that is.

I very much so agree with Dave in Wales, I tried them all (well the zoom models) and decided to go with the Sigma 8-16. Those extra 2/3 mm make a huge difference on a wide angle lens.

Yes I agree there are mixed reports on anything, there really is no substitute to going to a local shop and try them all for yourself. If I was really pixel peeping I would have said that in my case the Nikon 10-20 would have taken the edge for sharpness. But a) it misses those extra 2mm, and b) I think very few would have a need to display 100% crops all the time :)

Thanks for all the replies.

The Sigma 10-20 looks a good idea as I would like something wider than my current 18-55. Its a little over my budget but might just mean saving a little longer. Plus if I ever upgrade to a FF it would be nice and wide :)

Interesting about the M42 option. Will need to have a little read up on that as its the first i've heard.

Thanks
