Hey folks,

I think my SGI 1600SW LCD monitor is on its way out, it's just started making a very very anoying high pitch buzzing noise.

It's deff the monitor, make no difference if i move the power cables around etc.

Has this happened to any one else?

Gona be a pain to replace if i have to, its 1600*1024 @ 17" and a bit rare these days.

Suppose it could be noise from the electronics etc, noise from coils maybe?

Any thoughts folk?

Probably an electrolytic capacitor in the power supply. They can make some weird noises as they age. Usually not a problem until they go POP!

Old fashioned CRT's used to have some very high voltages (10K) to power the tube and this caused all sorts of odd noises when the caps got old.

yeah, thought it might be a coil or somthin that needs sealing up again.

Will have to take it apart some time soon and take a look.

I work with some good engineers so hopfully they can help out!

As it's an LCD, and is getting on, its most probably the backlight PSU dying - had a similar thing on an IBM LCD monitor years ago.

I ordered a new Backlight Power board from the US and all was well again. Infact its still going strong at a friends as we speak.

Money really, don't want to fork out for a new one.

yeah, i would have to go to 20" if i wanted the same sort of resolution as i've got now (1600*1024).
