I'm off to York for an overnight stay with the family (2 adults, 8yo and 4yo) on the 4th Jan, has anyone got suggestions on where to visit that won't cost the earth?

Already shortlisted:

National Railway Museum
Yorvik
Walk on the city walls

Main museum.
River trip.
Shambles.
Market Square (just off 'The Shambles') - often buskers and entertainment going on there.

York Dungeons
Cliffords Tower
Ghost walk
York Minster

National Railway Museum is brilliant for adults and kids alike.

The Yorvik centre often has large queues, so is best to go early at opening time.

The Castle Museum is a good museum and next to Clifford's Tower.

Ghost Walks are really good although possibly of less interest to children and are better in the evening.

City Walls are good but quite dangerous to walk on in places with small children.

The Shambles is nice for the history, but Stonegate is better for shops and teas rooms.

The Minster is a must see, although last time I was there they were charging admission.

P.S. Also the Yorkshire Air Museum is at Elvington just south of York if your kids like planes.

Some great ideas there. Have been to the minster earlier this year on my own, will have to try and find my ticket as it was valid for 12 month.

Really fancy Yorvik, so as suggested I'll get there for opening if we do.

Think I'll leave the scots for my next visit, lol

Ooops ... saw you had a four year old. Maybe York Dungeon is not suitable?

A. No, as long as children aged 15 and under are supervised by an adult, there isn't a problem. Please note, children under 4 years can enter the Dungeon for free, however the visit is not recommended for young children. If you are unsure whether the dungeon is suitable for your child, please call site for further guidance and advice on 01904 632 599.

If you want to go to Yorvik then pre-buy your tickets via the phone and avoid the queue. You can do it when you get there.

Invade the Scots?
That'll be a bit of a trek with an 8yo and a 4yo, and a longer trek home home after my 10 yo get finished with them, it's just after new year and he'll be angry and hung over.:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Lots of good ideas on here already.

Take plenty of money. York is Rip Off Britain at it's best !

If architectural photography interests you then inside the railway station is impressive in places.

Evertything everybody else has said but I found the Jorvik centre a real rip off and they donr allow photography

I'll check their website about photography

Will be with family so just the usual snaps

Have to go to York for work purposes every now and then

Couple of times back they were giving away free mens toiletries at the station

Told them it was ok, i'm from London and i've seen these things before, made the young lady laugh and she gave me another lot

If your looking for something to eat, I can recommend The Masons Arms's Steak Pie on Fishergate.

Best pie Ive ever tasted.

I've been and come back, but it'll be noted for next time. Plan to visit a few times over the next year.

I went to the Minster as I had tickets from last time I was there (they last 12 month). Also went and saw Jorvick and Dig, both great places. Saw the Haunted House on Stonegate which was good, but not great for the little one (but he did manage to get round the full house) and also a couple of sneaky visits to the Olde Starr Inn.

Had a great 2 days, shame the weather was a bit wild but looking forward to going again.

Glad you had a good time in the real capital of england

Its one of the few places that you can go to and its still a beautiful city and has lots to do regardless of weather.

What was Dig like? My office is bang opposite but I've never been in.

Dig was good, first you did a pretend archaeological dig in 4 different 'aged' areas where you dug in the fake soil and found artefacts. The second stage was to look through a tray of finds and guess what the items were. Both these were done with one of the staff and the one we had was very helpful.

There were a few other bits after that, took about an hour in total. Really enjoyed it. Would highly reccomend getting the YAT Pass (£16 per adult for a full year)
