Recently acquired a new vista based pc as my old xp machine was getting on a bit. At the time of purchase I enquired at PC world about moving files/photo's across to the new machine and was told the Vista operating system can handle that.

Great me thinks lets give it a whirl. The hard drive from the old pc was dropped into a usb caddy as the old pc has gone to the recycling god in the sky.

Everything hooked up and ready to go, low and behold after several screen prompts my new machine says I don't have admin rights to move files across from old to new pc.:bang:

After lots of fiddling with account/admin settings alas I'm unable to get around this problem.

I'm sure I am missing something here but what? any idea's from you techie's out there?

Perhaps I should have bought a Mac.:bonk:

Sounds like you need to go into the advanced properties of the drive/folder and "take ownership" of the files on the drive, including sub folders. Not sure I can explain it in any detail but essentially the old drive is "secured" to a different account. By taking over the ownership you should then be able to do what you like with them.

Hope this gives you a pointer in the right direction...

Been there done that still stuck:(
I'll give Bill Gates a call to see if he can sort it.

Sorted thanks hep, Googled it :)
