The tripod & head minefield, help!

Hi folks,

Well just went ahead and bought the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 G VR. My poor old Manfrotto tripod is not up to the job and I am needing somthing with more ooommph! I spent ages looking at various Gitzo and Manfrotto tripods at the NECs Photography Show and to be honest I am non the wiser and I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

I have the 1.7x teleconverter for the 400mm and I will be getting a 2x converter also so the tripod will need to be happy at 800mm!

Any help / insights will be greatly appreciated :-)

If you buy a Gitzo it won't be an expensive mistake - just expensive... lol

Look at the GT3542 or if secondhand:

What sort of budget do you have - might help people suggest options?
 
Hi,

I have been looking at the GT5542 tripod and maybe a wimberley head. I would like to get away with spending as little as possible but if I want to use the 2x converter I need to have a tripod that is able to shoot at 800mm. I would rather spend the money than have blurry images because I was a cheapskate on the tripod!
