When doing group portraits outdoors what do you do?

Sun behind the group - but light comes into the lens

Sun behind you - but everyone squints

Sun to Left or Right - but bright spots and harsh shadows to fill flash out?

Haven't worked out what for the best yet, so wondered what others do, and perhaps any secrets.

At a wedding last year the tog took all the group shots into the sun with fill flash. Makes the hair glow a bit with the backlighting. So i guess the answer varies if you have a flash or not.

Try and find a bit of shade and use fill flash?

It's a tricky one, that's for sure!

Cheers,
James

It's an old wedding snappers trick and works best with really bright sun and a huge great metz stick type flash. The idea is that you're the only person with a powerful enough flash to balance the fill light with the backlighting from the sun. All the rellies take the groups while you do but they mostly get very underexposed people or totally blown backgrounds and have to buy yours.

It was about the only bit I enjoyed of the few weddings I had to shoot. :D:D

Errrrm.... what's this new word.... "Sun" - never seen this before... ;) is it something to do with the weather :)

Unless you can find that elusive bright shadey area KIM ... ... and assuming there is ever going to be such a thing as 'sun' ... :suspect: ... I would go with the 'Into the sun using fill flash' routine personally ... ...

... But I am no 'spert ... :D

:p

Thanks guys.

I find the Sigma 24-70 gets lens spots quite badly even with the sun shade on when pointing into the sun, but I'll try with my hand over the top :)

Do you have the EX DG Macro? I find this happens with mine... Maybe it has something to do with the the shape of the shade? I find by attaching it losely, I can swivel it around to stop the sun.

Either that - or make your own (somehow) that's a little bigger :)
