Time has come for me to sell the motorbike and plough the money into some camera gear. I'm thinking about getting a sigma 70-200 2.8. It's mainly for motorsport so I want the quickest focussing possible. Does anyone know if there is any difference in the focusing speed of the old version of this lens or the new macro model? I was wondering if turning it into a macro lens might slow down the focusing a bit?

Cheers,
Kev

not sure about the macro version Kev but the normal one is fast enough. Can hunt a little bit in low light but don't they all.

ive got the macro version of this lens and its very good, very sharp, but i find im always wanting to go a bit further than 280mm with the 1.4tc, ive just ordered the 170-500 to go that extra distance

Aahhh, so you did take it out of the box :p

Cheers guys,

I'm lucky in that all of my motorsports stuff so far is club racing so I'm not miles away from the track behind a fence. I am wondering if the 70-200 might be a bit short though and looking at the 100-300 F4 too. AF speed is really important to me though so I think that will be the deciding factor.

the 100 - 300 HSM is no slouch

I have a 70-200 2.8 and it focuses very quickly indeed even with the 1.4x tc on

Cheers all, 120-300 is WAY out of my price range. Unfortunately at the minute Sigma don't do either of the lenses with HSM in the Minolta mount (stop laughing at the back there), do you think the HSM makes that much difference?
