Yes
I recently bought my first "good" lens.
I am now looking at my credit card and its crying... I have booked the missus in for having a kidney removed and my parents got twitchy when I asked about their life cover..

Up until now I have been more than happy with the results from various tamron and cheaper canon lenses.

however I bought my first piece of L glass the other week and now...

so there I was thinking .. glass is glass is glass. and tbh whilst taking the shots didnt notice too much of a difference. yes it focused a bit quicker and was much quieter but other thna that I didnt think much of it.

then I opened up the files in lightroom and photoshop...

the lens btw is a 70-200 and I am well chuffedwith it. colours seem better and the focus is noticably better with sharper pictures.

so either canon have something in their cameras taht recognoses the L glass and switches to "better picture" mode or the glass does indeed make a big difference. I guess with lenses you get what yo pay for.

Don't know what light you have been shooting in so far but get the 70-200 in some good light and you really get the wow factor :)

Pingu,

Welcome to the slippery slope...there's no going back now...you're doomed....in fact, we're probably all doomed.

I used to take bad shots and always blamed the lens. I've now got "a few" L's.....still take bad shots but haven't got any excuses now.:'(

Ditch the missus (= £100 saving per month? Or am I a tight git?) unless you can get the going rate for various body parts. Do they do human breakers yards?

I'm pondering getting Nikon's equivalent lens that is the 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR... at a snip of £1k! Failing that, I may look at the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM at half the price.

But again... is there £500 worth of difference? Or am I thinking in the wrong way?

Errrr.....who, may I ask, is going to carry the kit bag then?.....not to mention the tripod and butty box.

...or indeed prepare the contents of the butty box! :scared:

I love my L lenses, but I can't help thinking I'm not going to buy anything other then L now...
Got 'L fever'

Good glass is one of those things that is (unfortunately) non negotiable - you get what you pay for (which is usually a lot!)
The difference decent glass will make to your images can be stunning though & if you need that quality then there's not really any alternative.
Welcome to the slippery slope of "L"

So what in your opinion (s) is a good standard zoom 'L' lens for a crop sensor camera like the 350D? What do you 'L' guys use as a walk around on crop sensor cameras?

I am using at present a 17-40L on my 10d as a walk around lens.
2 of my len's are L and the other 2 are not, I did want the 50mm L but the price was just too much so bought a very good F1.4 second hand and have to say the 50L must be something special to beat this, if and when I do get a 5D, I may get a 24-105L but I will try and get a second hand one.

heh

at least my bad shots are clearer now :)

i have the 70-200 L too, great lens, i want a 17-40L and 100-400L now, they'll have to wait a few centuries for those though. I actually got a nice tax rebate the other day which would have got me the 17-40 but i was stupid enough to tell the other half, needless to say she claimed it :(

I too can appreciate the bug of good glass. When I first started out with all this lark I had a kit lens with my D100! Then got the 24-120 VR and thought it was amazing and glass couldn't get any better...oh how wrong I was!! I randomly got back in touch with an old school friend and his dad is really in to his photography, he let me borrow his 28-70 and 70-200 VR f2.8 and I was hooked instantly. And the rest, as they say, is history... :D

Ok thanks, I may think about a 17-40 although I do quite like the extra reach of my Sigma 17-70 that I have a the minute. So the 17-40 would be 27-65 in 35mm terms, perhaps a bit short for some stuff like portraits. Shame there isn't a 17-85 L...

In my experience they're a bit clumsy!
Sorted that one...put the tasteless carriage clock that her mother bought you in the bag too :naughty:

EF28-70L or EF35-350L for me...the missus uses an EF28-135IS...it doesn't get in the way so much when she's pouring the coffee.

Same here, I can take the ultimate in poorly composed shots and then marvel in the sharpness of the detail captured.
My standard response is that I'm nowhere near good enough not to use L glass...I leave the non-L lenses for the real pros.
