Think I would have gone to the doctors to have it out, only because they can give you a bit of local anaesthetic if needed. Just call me a wimp.
 
I thought it was a bad idea to pull things out like that and break them off?
 
LOL - At least the iodine hides the baldy patch a bit.

Suppose it depends how often he has got them and if his wife knows what she's doing
Bit like dogs and ticks, vets etc sell these tools for removing them, I always have and still do use my finger nails without a problem
I did laugh though :lol:
