Hi, finally got some time off and have booked a two night stay in Buxton in the Peak District. What I would love is advice on what is worth visiting as I could spend hours wasted merely looking around. Would love some shots of waterfalls and gonna visit lady bower lake. Any advice on landscapes and must see locations would be appreciated. Thanks

There's lot's to see and explore around Buxton, my favourites are:
Three Shires Head - small waterfall
The Roaches - amazing views
The Goyt Valley & reservoirs

All three locations are close to Buxton and offer some great scenery for walking and photography

Chris

Thanks chris, literally can't wait to see some proper landscapes. Looks amazing just need some semi decent weather while I'm up there. Thanks again

Another popular walk is the Monsall Trial, along a disused railway track. I've not yet walked it myself, but it's on the to-do list.

Have a great holiday,

Chris

From Buxton you can pretty much get anywhere in the peaks in an hour or so. Some of my favourite places are Ashford in the water, really nice village with river walk to Bakewell (we always park in Ashford and walk to Bakewell as it's free..... I am a tight Yorkshireman after all). There's some great spots in Ashford village for landscapes and lots of old chocolate box cottages to shoot. Bakewell itself also has great locations like cobbled streets and along the river but can get quite busy. I tend to visit as early as possible.
Lady bower is a must, as is Castletown, mam tor if your up for a brief hike, winnats pass offers great photo opportunities, there's a few blue john caves in the area too along with a castle ruins on the hillside. Depending on the wind, parasailing is very popular in Castleton on the hill to the side of winnats pass, so photo opportunities there also.
Not sure about waterfalls in the peaks but with all the rivers there's bound to be plenty, try searching good old Flickr.
There's a village called foolong (or similar) where a friend of mine lives, at the minute there's barn owls which he spends lots of time photographing.
Chatsworth house is worth a visit this time of year, and I can highly recommend all the other locations mentioned previously by other forum members.

Have fun, look forward to seeing your shots.

Dont forget to look at Stanage Edge thats a great walk and if you drop down off the edge there are hundreds of millstomes littering the landscape off the southern edge. The edge is where they produced the millstones and they just got left there. Makes some cracking photography, and interesting foregrounds for Landscapes.

Lathkill dale, Wolfscote dale, Dove dale, Hartington, Tissington allworthy great photo opportunities. And all within easy reach of Buxton!

Thanks for all your input, going end of May now due to poor weather when I was first booked to go. Looking forward to seeing these awesome places. Thsnks

Ladybower is no where near Buxton I'd say a good hour or so's drive. You'll struggle to find waterfalls of a decent size in the peaks you have to go to North Yorkshire for those I'm afraid. Feel free to have a look at my photo stream I photograph a lot of the places you are after going to, particularly Ladybower. www.flickr.com/muzzieman

It's hardly so far away that it's not worth the travelling..

Buxton to Rushop Edge, over Mam Nick (stop for the obligatory Mam Tor photo, but Back Tor which is the next one to the east has always looked the better photo to me) and down into Edale (if you go up to the village there's a pretty church and a pack horse bridge over the river), through Edale and into Hope, along the Hope Valley and turn off at The Marquis of Granby for Bamford and the reservoirs (Ladybower isn't that spectacular, head up to Derwent Dam which is the next one up). Then back down through Bamford and Hope, but this time ignore the Edale turn-off (if you turn left instead you come past the cement works and into Castleton from the back of the village) and head straight on to Castleton (there are some nice views of Peveril Castle from back roads behind the village), up Winnats Pass and back to Buxton. A nice day out when you factor in stops for eats, drinks, photos and a walkabout. Or you could ignore Edale, head down Winnats and see Castleton on the way to the reservoirs, and do a long loop back to Buxton via Hathersage, Grindleford and Tideswell. There are back roads that loop and parallel the main road for quite a bit of both of these options, they've better scenic possibilities than the main road but I'd struggle to describe them as it's been too many years since I lived in the area.

Check the dates you're going to see if there's a Well Dressing, this is the most complete listing I can find. They're quite unique to the area, and worth a look.

In addition to all the cracking spots above.

Solomons temple is a folly on the hills above Buxton, it gives a great view over the bowl at sunrise, works well for receding layers if you get a misty morning.

Ramshaw rocks is full of character on the A53 towards leek, a good spot for sunset.

A couple of shots of both in my Flickr stream.

It's a great area overall, you'll be spoilt for choice!

The area around Stanton Moor is a good spot with a Stone Circle, Earl Grey Tower, around the old quarry are a few abandoned mill stones and the views are great from the top. It also has a decent pub in the village, there's a nice easy circular walk that takes in all of the spots I have mentioned you also look down on to the Peak railway so can get a few landscapes with a steam train in the shot which can add something a little different.

Tim.
