Story here................

Long ago, 2012, I bought my 7D, still have it to this day, it's still in excellent condition, with less than 20k clicks, probably around the 15k mark. Then, in 2017, I 'upgraded' to the 5Div, I love that camera, it's not going anywhere for a long time, it may will outlive me, still only around 8k clicks. I did though feel I needed something smaller to run alongside the 5D (and mirrorless) and it was at this point that my long wait on the Canon R7 began, easily 3 years ago now. I dabbled with Fuji, bought a T10, still have that too. It wasn't quite for me though and I didn't want to run another brand alongside the 5D.

So the wait for the R7 continued, I checked the rumour sites religiously but to no avail. I got so fed up of waiting, that I bought an M5, mainly for its size, for carrying to and from my Kingfisher sites, even with my 100-400 on, it's not a huge package and still, quite light, possibly even smaller overall than the T10 with a 100-400 on it. Incidentally, the M5 has blown me away, it has its limits but they are far higher than I expected them to be, it's a peach of a camera.

I did consider the 7Dii but given my woes with the Mark1, I dismissed it as a possibilty.

I've been hanging on to my kit (the 7D, T10 and lenses) with a mind to trade it when the R7 is finally announced. At last it seems, I will get my way.

I think this can now be considered as the replacement for the 7D line and I am excited. Apparently and it seems fairly concrete this time, the R7 is coming and will be announced on the 24th May. As with all announcements and predictions, we won't really know all the details until it drops but it could be time to trade the 7D, T10 and even possibly, the M5.

Not wishing to rain on your parade, have you considered the 'chip' shortage.

It's definately held this camera up, I think it would've dropped by now if it wasn't for the shortage. The date seems more concrete now but I have noticed it's a Tuesday, not Canon's usual Thursday announcement day. There may be something in that.

We'll see, fingers crossed.

Good luck :)

The MkII is far superior to the MKI
Although I still have mine ( I went from a MKI ) its quite old tech now.

I use an M50 for Macro ( with the canon 100mm L lens) for its lightness.
Although I am quite taken with mirrorless, I can't justify the prices of the modern ones.

I sold my Sony A9 and 200-600mm recently as I was expecting something like this before the end of the year. Have also sold one of my Pentax K-1's and a bundle of Sony lenses. I have the cash ready for the R7 then this morning I took my ageing 7D MKII and 100-400mm II with the 1.4x attached out for a spin.

Now why was it I wanted an R7

Yes, I've been told a few times that the Mk2's sensor is much better than the Mk1's. One other thing I like about the Mk2 is that the button layout is virtually identical to the 5Div, so muscle memory would be very effective.

I am really impressed by the M series, the M5 is a cracking camera.

Can't argue with those. (y)

Any suggestions on the price? £3k?

I was hoping sub £2k but I'm not so sure.

I am thinking 2.5k but it's difficult to say without the full specs. I imagine it's going to be very popular with wildlife shooters.

Bit annoyed that I sold the R5 grip I had now, especially if they dump it all in a R5/R6 body.

R6 body was intially rumoured. R5 body has been rumoured now though but we won't know until the announcement. Would be nice to have the top screen.

Sub 2k and I wouldn't even look at Panamoz :)

A couple of months ago, the price was rumoured at £1.8k but that was based on the R6 body. If it's put into an R5 body, it may well be over £2k.

I'd be suprised if it goes into an R5 body but that said, if it's replacing the 7D line, then it would probably be Canon's, flagship APSC R, so it may end up in an R5 body.

This is too exciting.

They have to give it a top screen to differentiate it from any "consumer" APS-C they bring out so I imagine it will be the R5 body.
I'm hoping for at least one CFexpress B slot (R5 body again) because I bought a couple of used cards and a reader for a decent price, it would be a shame if I had to sell them on again. Bit annoyed with myself in that I sold my R5/R6 grip a couple of weeks ago though. I still have a couple of EF-R adapters (one with a control ring)

Now I have to decide whether to keep my EF 100-400mm MKII and 1.4x or buy the RF 100-500mm .... do I keep my 7D MKII ..... I'm going into GAS overload

I hate selling gear.

£1349 for the R7,

£899 for the R10.

Over to the main R thread now. (y)
Great news, not 100 percent sure but I think the R7 is a bit cheaper than the 7D was at launch
The R7 will be the one to go for in my opinion as the R10 won’t have the in body image stabilisation

From what I remember the 7D was £1249, and the 7Dii was £1399 !

I did buy a new 7D and loved it as it was my spring board in to expanding my experience of shooting different forms, i.e motor sport, air shows, wild life, macro, even portraits !
I waited for years for the 7Diii to arrive and got bored waiting so I sold my 7D and purchased a used 7Dii.
The 7D ISO was bad over 800 and now I could push the ISO up to 4000 and have great IQ !

That's petty much how I see it too. :)

Looking at the specs, the R7 seems to be the one a lot of togs would be drooling over.
Reasonably priced as well.
Canon may have been late to the mirrorless table but they've certainly caught up with a vengeance!!

From the spec I have read the EVF and screen are lower res than R6 and that for me will be an issue as the R6 is lower than than the R5 !
When you put on 1.4x extender and 100-400 or 100-500 the resolution will be more pixelated when you zoom to max focal lenght. As most users will want the R7 to take advantage of the 1.6 crop factor !
This is of course reflected in the £1,349 price tag and being a 7Dii owner I was really looking forward to the R7.
Most people suspected the R7 would be utilizing the R6 body components and therefore the price tag would be around £1,800k ish
As for the sensors it seems to be a tweaked 90D has been used as it is not a stacked version.

I recently purchase a Sony A6600 as I wanted animal & Human eye AF and what a game changer that is, There was not any other affordable Canon camera with eye AF and the cheapest at the time was the R6 at £2,500 apx

However, the is selling point of the R7 is the auto focus which is similar to the R3 and that is a big deal ! ! !

I am intrigued by your saying that when you zoom your lens to the maximum that you interpret that the image in the EVF or rear screen will become more pixellated

You are zooming opitically not digitally ;)

the lens on the camera will of course be optically, however as the image is translated on the senor the EVF on the R7 will be digital.
The same as if you cropped in on a photo and then stretch it ti fit the whole monitor screen !
I am sure Tony 7 Chelsea Northrup did a YouTube video on this subject.

Hmmmm?

When you take a picture on your 7D2 and view 'as is' on the rear screen have you had an issue of concern too?

Yes, greater resolution EVF and rear screens are good but AFAIK the image the sensor 'sees' is not being stretched to fit the EVF and/or the rear screen, if anything it is being shrunk.

The screen on my 7Dii is pretty reasonable for 20mb image.

lower res on an EVF mean the image will not appear sharp or detailed in the eye piece, though this may not be too much of an issue. As it is not the actual final image taken by the sensor.
What we also do not know is the refresh rate of the EVF, because a sports wildlife camera really does need a fast fps !

I think the R7 has EVF 120 fps or power save 60 fps
