I don't suppose I will hear back from her.....

Do you think it's easy to trawl through flickr asking if you can use other peoples photographs for free - then put together a book of images which you then sell to make profit?

No because it's incredibly difficult to make money out of any sort of book of photo's!
 
As soon as you get one of those, I'd be adding a big fat watermark to the image. Because you once you say no, they'll probably just steal it anyway (assuming they hadn't already).
