I have read many reviews about this lens and am very tempted to get one, but just wanted to ask you people what you thought, i know a couple on here own one, any chance i could see your pics that you`ve taken with it, especially football ones if you`ve got them.

The only other lens that has caught my attention is the sigma 120 - 300mm 2.8 but cant really afford to go the extra £400 and 2nd hand for one. so really interested in the Nikon lens, so lets hear your praises and pictures.

Many thanks in advance.

Oh and is there any teleconverters that can be used with this lens?

Great lens but not the best for football. I've covered a few games with a 70-200 2.8 and its a bit limiting. As long as you are in decent light and don't have to crank the ISO too much then you can get away with some pretty savage cropping to fill the frame.

It does work well with the TC-14 teleconv, what body have you got? DX or FX?

It only works with the older (pre 1992) TC-14 models, not with the current TC-14E

Sorry my fault for not noticing it was not the AF not the AF-S you were talking about.

Totally out of my depth now as only used the AF-S version. :(

So would you say a 100 - 300mm f4 be a better choice which is near enough the same price range ish.

Are you talking about the push pull? If so, it's a decent lens, works well with the kenko 1.4 TC, which gives you 420mm 35 equiv range. I don't know about the 100-300 or the 2 ring 80-200.

The 2 ring 80-200mm is the one i`m quite set on, at the weekend i spoke to another football photographer and he uses a sigma 100-300mm f4 lens and he says this does him fine however he would like to have a f2.8 instead, and i was thinking i would prefer to do away with the reach and settle for 200mm for the sake of f2.8 rather than f4.

a 300mm f2.8 is just not affordable for me.

This is not a high standard of football however i do get paid good money to do it. i use a Nikon D300.

If you mean this lens then it's built like a tank, and the optical quality is superb. Focussing is pretty quick for a non-AFS lens, but with my D70 it is noticeably a bit slower than the newer AFS 70-200. If the focus motor in your D300 is more highly torqued then it would be faster.

My 80-200 AF-D suffered from back focus at its minimum focus distance when used near to 200mm. This is mentioned in my camera user manual ( D300,( thankyou to Puddleduck for pointing it out)) so i sent it back for a refund and bought a 70-200VR.
You might want to read the following from Nikonians forums, here.

Of course you may not have any problems with yours for football shoots, and I know there are happy users with the lens, but it surprised me and I think it is worth being aware of the issue!

Thank you for your advice, Although now i`m more frustrated as to what lens i should buy, this isn`t a high level of football i`m covering but i do want a good quality lens that i dont need to upgrade after a short while this will be my only time to purchase one. it seem the only one i keep hearing about that is good over and over again is the sigma 120-300mm 2.8 lens which is gonna be an extra £400 and will be 2nd hand, which to be honest i`m not keen on.
