There is something here called the MK hum.
Where ever you live you can either hear the traffic on the M1 or the A5 by-pass.
When I stepped outside earlier, I could hear neither, I could hear kids playing way off in the distance,
I could hear birds chirping way off in the distance.
The lack of noise reminded me of the first day of the first lock down..
Eerily quiet...

What's it like where you are traffic wise?

No more will the caravaners block our roundabouts, as they scurry from home to their little patch of rented England (at least until next spring)...

Assuming they can get the fuel to get home, otherwise they will be there a little while longer :D

Not even in jest, please! :wideyed:

Exactly - we have a lot of traffic but I think lot are cruising around using the fuel they have to find more fuel. I passed a petrol station(2 in fact) on the A45 dual carriageway just now, where url is about 12p/litre more expensive then everywhere else always, both with long queues of people coming from either Wellingborough or Northampton to fill up. Meanwhile I noticed that Sainsburys had a tanker and had now opened up again. Hopefully in a few days the panic will have subsided as they realise there is no actual shortage.
But I'm glad the "hum" is reduced Chris (@Cobra )

Its like living very much in the countryside at the moment (y)
Its strange though, its one of those things ( as a local) you don't notice until its stopped ..

I managed to fill up yesterday ( I was running on vapour) before the siege mentality truly hit but yes I also noticed the large price hike even then, in readiness ;)

From my local hub pages, it seems that by midnight they had drained just about every local supermarket and smaller garage.
I needed petrol, E5 or E10 both work, but even then a lot were out of diesel, and talking to the guy behind counter he reckoned he'd be lucky to get Diesel, Mon / Tues earliest.

I had this hum at Rannoch Moor one August morning last year. It was still dark and I'd parked up waiting on pre dawn light.

Then I realised it was the midges. :runaway:

We have no major roads near us, the closest is the A48 which is about 4-5 miles away. However the wind blows down the Severn estuary and straight through the valley to us, so sometimes it sounds like it’s right outside our door. It’s very odd!
When the wind changes direction we can’t hear any traffic at all.

No matter what the wind direction is or indeed no wind, its always there.
But if the wind is in the right direction I can hear "Silverstone" possibly 10 /12 miles away as the crow fly's.

That doesn't suprise me, I remember the first time I heard an F1 car in the flesh (at Silverstone too) in the early 90s, when an F1 car sounded proper good. I hadn't even arrived at the circuit and I could hear them.

If they run out, they won't be contributing to the hum!

Being on the edge of town, in a cul-de-sac, we get very little passing traffic. If the wind's in the wrong direction, we can hear the trains about a mile away, over a hill. Occasionally hear a car or 2 using the road up through the woods as a hillclimb track but that's rare and is over in a few minutes.

Used to hear traffic on the A14, but since they rerouted it westwards the hum has gone.

Once they finished buggering about with it, it was an amazing bit of road (y)
But I no longer have need to travel it.

It's crazy busy here traffic-wise, makes me glad I don't drive. But I live in a small-ish town nowhere close to any motorway [though it is considered a link town to Dublin being just 35mins away, with many commuters] most of it is just your usual work/school/shoppers outings and because it's a small town it seems busy all the time. I can cycle into town for work in 5mins, driving it would take 20-25mins

im about a mile from the Essex M25 to the east, A127 is about 2 miles to the north. dont tend to hear either during the day. At night its the further A127 that you can hear sports bikes from when they are maxing the throttle.
We are 1/2mile from the end of the district line depot and a branch line, when the light wind is from the West we can hear the trains on the branch line and tubes pulling into the depot sidings and the odd whistle. Not enough to be annoying

It's normally so quiet here that someone using a something like a chainsaw or strimmer is a serious annoyance. There are times even during a weekend afternoon when the only sound is birds and other natural sounds and sometimes the only thing that interrupts that is a couple of women* out for a walk . I just stuck my head outside and the only sound, really the ONLY sound is the fan of my neighbour's radon vent, which is about the same as a normal extractor fan 20 feet away. Even the owls in the woods across the back field can be a bit annoying although they are quiet tonight.
</ShowningOff :sorry: >

*sorry but it always is, speaking apparently at the tops of their voices completely oblivious to the beauty and tranquillity around them. Not all women, obviously, but ...

Its left the local traffic here in a right state with no direct route through to the A14 or A1
The old A14 renamed to the A1307 has a bit chunk missing now they have removed the viaduct over Huntingdon station.

Imagine what it must be like living here, less of a hum, more of a heavy relentless rumble!

It's Stott Hall farm, where the M62 cross's the South Pennines and the carriageway splits round it.

We only live 5 minutes away and walk the moors above most days, the noise is constant. Fortunately we can't hear it at home, it's suppressed by the hills :)

And just to dispel any myths, here's the reason why it ended up trapped by the never ending traffic Stott Hall Farm

I do know what you mean our next door neighbor is the same she talks in a loud shouty voice and we know all their business can’t help hearing everything they say  :$

That's not so clever :(

now they have removed the viaduct over Huntingdon station.
I remember when they closed that, I didn't realise it was permanent I thought it was closed for upgrade.
And yes it was a right PITA when they did. I had a "call" just off the next junction, and it was hell of a diversion to get to it :(

I have one of those :(
She really doesn't need a phone to communicate to the next county.
If that wasn't bad enough, she starts every reply with "you know" :(

Not exactly ideal is it?
( and yes I did read the myth buster)

We have the "Caister Hum"! There have been several ideas on it. Dredging off the coast. The wind turbines (it occured before the turbines were erected)! Water being pumped to the water tower. Gas being pumped to the power station. Tinnitus!!!!

I'm not getting the reference, sorry.

I am still getting the "dangerous website blocked" message though.
I guess you will never know in that case :D

It is temporary apparently, but nobody knows when it will be done or where the new road will be.
