the legalities of taking photos

Hi,

I have just joined talkphotography so I hope I am posting this in the right place.

I am new to photography and I wondered what the law was on taking photos of people at events/in public and using the images in exhibitions/selling of photos. Can anyone also help with regards to brand names. Say I took a photo of a pair of shoes that showed the brand name and I wanted to exhibit the photo, would I be able to do this. I wondered whether you were allowed to use brand names in art ie. like Andy Warhol did with his tin of beans!

I would welcome any help!

Regarding the selling of photos/work featuring people taken at events and in public you would need a signed 'Release Form' from the person or people involved. (as far as I understand it) - brands, I am not so sure about.
