To set the scene, last night I was trying to print an image from my ex-Canon 1D mark III, with just only 10MP output. 40x30cm to be precise. Even at this size it struggled to retain sharpness, while at 100% on screen it looks as good as any other. Of course it's OK from NORMAL viewing distances 1-2m away, but imagine this being a much larger A1 print, which I might consider doing at some point. This was for personal use by the way, and it's just a mountain scene: blue sky, rocks and ice. While it is detailed, it is not very complex.
Photoshop upscale did a reasonable job, but not perfect, and also exaggerated any artefacts, so much so I had to go back to lightroom and use brush over sky with -30 sharpness, -30 clarity and -30 texture (values greater than applied elsewhere). You just don't get this so badly with > 16MP cameras.
So anyway what are the best options available out there to convincingly up-res an image better than photoshop can?
I am just curious at this point should I need this for a customer.
