Non UK The Gambia

My wife and I are thinking of going to the Gambia next February, does anyone who has been have any tips / recommendations for hotels, locations, guides.

We went a few years ago and stayed at the Atlantic Hotel which is right in Banjul and gave access to the local way of life, I prefer that to laying on the beach all day.
However looking at reviews it seems that the hotel has seriously dipped its standards and although being a 5* people are saying 3* at maximum, so I can't recommend it.
There are a few hotels around Banjul but the majority are out on the coast and are more isolated from busy Banjul and its people, markets etc.

Isn't Gambia good for bird watching< (photography), John, is that part of the plan?

I was looking into a trip to the Gambia with Naturetrek last year....ended up going to Prague instead with L&L...I wanted to focus on bird photography but the only trips available to me at the time were 'birding' trips; NT advised that I should look at a specific photography trips because the objectives were different.

Bill thank you for asking the question, you are correct. The intent is bird photography / watching. We are not beach people, unless it’s winter for waders!
