I’ve just upgraded to CS3, I’m a bit confused (no change there then) about this ‘non destructive’ way of saving the changes you make to an image. I like to end up with a copy of the original RAW file plus a large jpeg of the finished processed image; set in concrete so to speak.

Someone posted on here the other day that their pc had lost the files containing the changes; they managed to find them in the end but what if they hadn’t? How do you save a definitive version of your image to your external HDD?

Hi M8, i lost the changes id made to my RAW files.. i was pretty p*ssed off cos the was over 100 i had just processed.. then i found that id deleted the little file produces by the adjustment.. you start with a RAW file and when you've finished with the changes it adds a .XMP file associated with it.. DONT delete it!!! lol..
So , once you've done youe changes you just cut and paste all files to your HDD.. and you're done..

I hope this answers your Q..

Thats the point, I don't want to change my raw files. having saved a DNG to my HDD; I make a copy, convert to tiff, do all my alterations then sharpen and save as a large jpeg. As I understand it; with lightroom and cs3 these changes are saved as separate files tagged onto the original file, which can get separated. This doesn't seem as safe as having a completed jpeg or tiff saved as a final finnished picture for future printing etc, which is what cs2 did.

Well you CAN have a finished Jpeg, once you've made your changes open the image and save as jpeg.. put it where you like then.. but you'll still have the original RAW and the XMP with the changes.. you can just delete the XMP if you like so your left with the finished Jpeg and the unchanged RAW..
