I don't know if it has been improved but the clone tool in LR5 seems to do a very good job. It seems to be able to seek out similar areas of tone or subject matter very well.

But......sometimes the area it finds is well away from the original. Given that you are usually cloning at 1:1 its sometimes way off the screen.

Which necessitates closing the clone tool down, returning to full screen view, re-opening clone tool, locating the clone patch, moving it nearer to the original, closing the clone tool, going to 1:1 again, re-opening the clone tool.....:bang:

And if you're working on a cropped image, the patch is sometimes outside the cropped area.:bang::bang::bang:

Is there a way round this? And I don't have Photoshop......

Jerry, you can move from 1:1 to full view and back again whilst staying in the spot healing brush tool - well on the Windows version anyway.

Anthony.

What do you think about the feather option for the clone tool in 5.2 ?

Oh, I've just discovered it! Very useful.

Didn't realise it was new.....but I've used it several times already today.

I never thought I'd use it but the radial selection filter is useful too. Damn good software!

Interestingly in relation to my original point I think I read that one of the improvements in v5.2 was for the clone tool to favour parts of the image "within the current crop".

Yes I agree that you can if you use the buttons top left. I'm adjusting to that way of working now, instead of using the loupe thingie.....(which gives you a new clone point instead)

I hate the feather option, I think the default setting in the earlier versions of LR was more than sufficient. I just think it adds time to the workflow. The earlier version wasn't broken.

Im glad that you are finding it useful.

I used "feather" a few times yesterday, but I wouldn't do so unless necessary. It seemed to iron out a few mis-matches between the cloned area - where there is little choice - and the background.

Got to be a good thing, I say.

But each to his own.:)
