Ive just been out across Morecambe Bay and took quite a lot of photos, messed around with a few settings and presets on my camera (sony a200) like
the creative style aptly named 'sunset' a few different white balances and messed around with exposure comp and apertures.

I was just wondering which settings were best for taking shots at sunset as 50% of my pics are dissapointing because of light, the composition i was quite pleased with!

any advice greatly appreciated.

(I took all the shots in A priority)

if you are taking in Av, then try and get a reading for the scene just to the side of the sun, recompose and then shoot...this should give you the nice orangey glow and keep some of the detail - if you meter for the sun then you loose detail in the surroundings.

ahh thank you, I was wondering why the 'orangey glow' was not being captured and was trying all sorts of saturation settings to bring it out :P

no probs...just hope the advice works for you! if you still have problems then posting a picture may help for people to have a look at where you may be going wrong

I always shoot the cloudy setting in WB then take a setting for exposure to the side as kfridge says.

It,s better to underexpose a little as you can brighten a little later in PP
but overexposed or blown shots are usually a lost cause ,and you should chimp and change as well.:rules:

I just meter close to the sun to stop the highlights blowing to much and leave the camera in Av mode with the aperature set at f8 unless I particularily want a narrow dof.

I generally throw it into Manual, set the aperture to f/11 and then just trial & error with the shutter speed until I get something I like. You'll get better results if you set the camera up to how YOU want the photo to look, rather than let the camera do the work and get results that it THINKS you want.
