The American Govt. can seize any .com domain!

bloody usa is doing my head in with its bid to control the internet recently.

surely they should have their own .us/co.us like everyone else and not hog all of the .com

this is part of the fight against piracy, porn, gambling, etc. Are you really surprised! they can also request your extradition even if it's been decided you haven't committed a crime according to Uk law and the likely hood is our government will ship you off. I'd be more worried about that than the closure of your domain.

.com = commercial not american... if your not breaking the law then nobody can do anything..

oh and the article is flawed.. they can't shut down sites.

No but they can and have taken over the registration of sites (and the DNS setup for them). As mentioned by mrgrubby - its their claim, not necessarily that its been tested in court and its based on US law...

Here is one such: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/03/01/bodog_shut_via_verisign/

Gambling online, legal in Canada, business in Canada, USians use it (when they should know not to...) shut down the business - of course. Makes perfect sense.

what i mean is.. a domain isnt a website.. a domain can be seized (maybe?) but the website would go on under another name.. thus the article the OP posted is flawed when it refers to shutting websites down... I can guess what they meant though :)

haha theers always a good bit :)

Expect to see a big push from non-American internet service providers of all stripes capitalizing on this event to make "not hosted in America" a major selling point

If they do away with your DNS entry though and you happen to be hosted on a shared box, that takes you offline just as well as being actually taken down... splitting hairs and counting angels on pinpoints - the effect is the same - people cannot get to their website. yes I know you can ask people to add entries to hosts files - but 99% of people will stare blankly and move along to their #2 choice.

And they used to say Fidel Castro was paranoid :cuckoo:
