The Amber Collective

Thanks for posting, an interesting little film. I've seen quite a bit of Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen's work before, the shot in Byker looking down the street is perhaps her most famous. It think the north of England was rich pickings in the 60's and 70's for documentary photographers, arguably because of the social upheaval and the end of the traditional industries. Some subjects were covered many times by different people, and done very well by the likes of Bulmer and McCullin, and I vaguely recall reading somewhere a quote from John Bulmer that there was a certain expectation from the Fleet Street picture editors of the type of picture they wanted form the north, and it was something like the ones in the film. I guess the difference here is that the Amber photographers are / were local, or doing longer term projects and not just hit and run visits.

I read that somewhere too.

There seems to be quite a lot of photography from the seventies and eighties being published these days. I have a feeling that it's partly due to the current interest in photography and photobooks which wasn't as strong back then, but I reckon it's also down to nostalgia on behalf of both photographers and publishers who are all reaching or in their sixties and looking back to the days of their youth. Good to see it though.

Very interesting. I remember a bit of the social documentary stuff in the 80s but there seems to be a rash of it being celebrated just now.

It makes me feel old though.
