This year's winners are displayed at the link below with a bit of info about each. Now I know that these things are very subjective and everyone has an opinion, but I'm a bit surprised at the quality of some of the photos. Has anyone been to Niagara and not got a similar shot of the Maid of the Mist?

Well it is the RPS!

I don't know about the Maid of the Mist one but I too am surprised - they are all pretty well executed but none of them grab me at all. I have seen, IMO, better on TP.

At least they seem to be moving away from Big Face on Muted Background Composite.

There's some good stuff in there, although strangely I think the Margaret Mitchell shot is one of the weaker ones (but then again I'm not a fan of the TW front runner either).

The sheep and background looks a bit like a Leibovitz pastiche (crossed with a bit of Arbus), but I really like it.

Horse in water is a bit TW 2010 but even so, nicely done.

I think that the Capaldi and Cuba portraits are cracking.

The portrait of the Cuban baseball player is the stand out photograph for me. The juxtaposition of the modern Cuban sports culture against the worn out background with cultural paraphernalia is striking and also shows the dilution of culture with America's influence seeping in.

Ummm, I think you might need to brush up on your history. Baseball was in Cuba in 1860s and the Spanish tried to ban it in the 1870s because it was seen as an anti-imperialist pursuit!

Or put another way, Baseball predates the Communist iconography by just under 80 years or so.

Does that mean its no good then? :exit:

On second viewing, there is something I like about the first one, the others are 'average'

Possibly the OOF clothes poles and lines as they are very clearly lined up for an effect, rather than just by chance?
