Well, they are up and running, testing has started in earnest, and my god there are some quacking ducks out there! I was looking at some photographs and a good bulk of the grid seems to have noses your average Mallard would be proud of!

Some more pics on official site HERE

So, thoughts and predictions for this season? Another RBR whitewash, or can the others keep them in check?

Kimi for the champion!!!!

I like vettel, Webber and Alonso as well.
Want to see how kimi will so as not many people after break can get any good results.( hopefully Kubica will differ once back behind the wheel)

Managed to get sky at the end of last year and can't wait to watch F1 in full HD with speakers on full blast :)

I'm interested to see how the Mclaren will be different to the other teams with such a different nose to the rest of the teams

The aero battle continues..

Personally I think the new regs have caused the ugly noses we've seen from most cars this year. Expect the rule to be changed for next year, Bernie won't like it so it'll end up being changed.

Meantime we have the exhausts to pay attention to. You may remember that EBDs are totally banned now, but teams will still try and blow bodywork with the gases, this has already been causing some issues with bits getting too hot (toro rosso had hot rear wishbones, mclaren an area of the floor). I expect the exhausts to change through the year as teams experiment whilst trying to stay within the regs.

Personally I'm wondering if Merc can pull some irons from the fire and build a car that will push them forwards, they had a bad year technically with the car last year and I'm sure the bosses have one eye on the performance and another on the balance sheet.

is that in spain ??

and big apologies to you ,,driving time to blackpool,,,,i was starting from here but you're not here you're there so you was of course right :p

....and you are not coming with us if your jokes are going to be THAT bad! :p

As for F1 - I agree the 'compare and contrast' essay on Sky coverage V BBC should be interesting and will cause some debate amongst fans over the season.

Hoping the McLaren can give Button a better car, but otherwise I am expecting the staus quo to pretty much match last year.... but we will see. Winter testing is a bit like Friday practice, no points, and rarely shows us who is fastest, though it can indicate who is struggling.

Anyone know when the sky f1 channel fires up ... ie ..pre season coverage .

My top 3

Vettle
Button
Alonso

Hoping tha Button will once again get the one up on Hamilton, I do so love it when Lewis loses the plot!!

Definitely looking forward to the season especially with Kimi back on the grid, I just hope Vettel and RBR don't completely dominate again.

(On a side note I'm hoping I can convince my OH to get Sky Sports for the F1 channel, he hasn't caved yet!!)

hopefully hamilton can get his head in gear this year (like him or not he's still a great to watch agressive driver) and mclaren as a whole can keep pace or better the redbulls.

Redbull already have interesting slits and gaps and stuff going on which I think is going to keep them out in front. Hopefully Mclaren have got it right with the lower front end, they struggled last year with a stiff car and can't think that a lower car is going to make that worse! I am amazed Ferrari have made such an ugly car...hopefully they have spent time on the mechanical side not the looks.

Cant say I am glad Kimi is back, never really was that keen on him. Hopefully Jenson and Lewis can actually help each other this year and do well. I think Vettel will be out in front again though and just hope Webber can get to grips with this car better than the last. It will be interesting to see what Di Resta can do now he is settled in too.

I'd love to see Mclaren really challenge Red Bull from the Off this season, and I'd like to see Jenson win. I'd also like to See Di Resta build on a very promising first season, hopefully the team will give him a car to help him get further up the grid.

Love to see McLaren up there again and Lewis to win the title

Remember to, the cars thats driving around in testing wont be anything like what they take to Aus for the first race, remember McLaren last year?

the new RB8 looks fab to, Adrian Newey works his magic again

I would love to see maclaren break down in every single race :)

I believe the 9th March is the launch date for Sky F1.

I have my HD package so looking forward to it.

Ah Kimi.............wasn't he the guy that won because the other two ruined each others chances?

Even in last years Red Bull I couldn't see him doing anything:p

Just hope McLaren and Ferrari can produce a winning car - anything to knock those pompous RBR pair....and that don't include Webber or Newey.

Hamilton - still gets my vote as the most exciting driver on the grid...let's just hope they don't wind him up too much again:thumbs:

I thought the DW12 was a strange looking car, then they started launching the 2012 F1 cars. Jeez, what an ugly bunch!

I'm worried about that nose. Why is it so different? I can't believe that all the others have missed a trick.
But I suppose a new nose could be designed and built in 24 hours.
Booking my Silverstone tickets tomorrow:eek: £240 for Sunday only? Or £285 and go for three days?

Traditionally a high nose allows air under the car, which then gets channelled under the car to help with grip, this area has seen innovation in recent years with protrusions at the front of the monocoque to try and manage the air.
The disadvantage of this approach is that CoG is higher.

The low nose gives better CoG but the air going under the car is more difficult to control.
McLaren have been using low noses for the last year or two, so its a continuation of that philosophy. Other teams have taken the compromise the stepped nose in order to keep it as high as possible.
Its not a case of missing a trick, just a different solution to a problem. Which one is more effective I guess we'll find out..

If you like the techie side have a look at Scarbs blog http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/

Looks like it will be q good season this year I'm off for testing in Barcelona for The second week they are there so hopefully they might start to show what they can really do.
Was a shock thou when first saw those noses but after reading up about them a bit.
Did laff about the comments about button not being able to see out the car does that mean Lewis will need a cushion to see then

Say NO to SKY !!!!
I will be getting eastern European Sat !

When I moved to Spain I promised myself I wouldn't be one of those typical ex-pats that gets an illegal sky installation so I will be watching it on Antenna 3 who are new to the sport. If their coverage is as good as La Sexta's was, then I will be happy.

IF I lived in the UK I would without doubt have Sky HD, not only for the F1, but for the IndyCar coverage that they have in HD too. I really don't get why more of you F1 fans don't watch IndyCar, always more thrilling and competitive than F1. And before anyone whines "it's all ovals"....get your facts right!

My prediction for 2012 F1

Vetel (in a good place)
Alonso (a car that works )
Hamilton (car a problem, mojo is returning, then off to Red Bull. Love you Lewis )
Webber (a couple of wins then retire)
Button (just doing what he does. Love you Jenson )
Raikkonen (a dispassionate return)
Massa (out on his ear)

I know Ferrari moaned about their car in testing, but remember Alonso won the British gp when the the field turned off their fsbd (farty sounding blown diffuser) It showed that their basic package was very good without the fsbd.

Also the Mclaren is a lot different (non step nose) to the other cars and this may signify a mistake, less air being rammed under the car.

Anyhow their will be a news blackout in my household during each non BBC coverage. Which may be un-achievable.

Just noticed Jennie Gow is the pit lane reporter for 5 live. She was bloody awful in Moto GP and thats an understatement.

I read an article that reason is that mclaren run their chassis a lot lower to the ground then all other teams so the dip at the nose required is not quite as drastic.

However the same article was also suggesting that the most optimal setup was a fairly high chassis with the nose being as low as possible so maybe Mclaren need to change their design to match that of the other teams.

Massive Mclaren fan so hoping Lewis and Jenson have a strong car this season. As much as I would love to see them win every race and dominate the way Red Bull have over the last season, I think seeing Red Bull, Mclaren, Ferrari and Also Mercedes all battling for wins throughout the year would add to a much more exciting season.

News today is the Trulli has lost his race seat with Caterham and Petrov will now be racing alongside Heikki this year. Sad to see an experienced driver dropped but I think he has had his time and is not managing to keep up with his team mate.

I watch Indycar, but with the move to more and more road courses and Danica having left (she could always be relied on to do something interesting, even if it wasn't always good ), I may not bother this year. For open wheel "road course" racing F1 is way out in front, many of the Indy road course races are terribly processional. Oval racing is such a different art and it is quite hard to appreciate at first, if like me you come from a background of following racing on what we consider conventional circuits, but it can still be completely compelling.

Despite following F1 for over 30 years and watching every race in its entireity, live if possible, my favourite race series these days is NASCAR though, followed closely by the LMES. Shootout this weekend, Daytona 500 next :D

Innit funny! I know you've competed a bit too, but I'm absolutely hooked on NASCAR as well! It's about the only motor racing on TV where you can see the driver actually working and the car moving around underneath him!

I've never been able to get into it. Most exciting thing I have ever seen live was when the Champ Cars raced at Rockingham in the UK (exactly 1 week after Zanardi's terrible accident). Now I've been to F1, but those machines made the F1 cars look like little toys. Watching them lap inches apart at an average of over 220mph was just incredible. No, they didn't have the kudos of F1, no they didn't have the sound of F1, but for sheer exhilaration it couldn't be beaten.

shame they never went back to Rockingham and instead left us with a soulless, desolate craphole circuit that doesnt serve a purpose anymore! i missed that race thinking id go the next time and they didnt come back when i could make it!

i like watching indycar, not really got into nascar but going to give it the old college try this year, ive been practicing shouting "YEEHAWWWW" and everything

I also saw them at Brands Hatch, but it was a total yawnfest. Instead of using the GP circuit they used the much smaller Indy circuit, and the cars were just too fast for such a small track, hence no overtaking. Real pity they never returned to Rockingham. I'm sure with so many Brits in the field now it would pull in the crowds.

Why do you think it's been called the Indy circuit since 1978 ;)

... I went to both Champ Car races too - incidentally working, hanging out a pitboard at Brands with 40 second lap times was impossibly silly hard work!

But they couldn't race on the Grand Prix loop then because its FIA International safety accreditation had lapsed.

More info on the sky F1 website.

Video from Martin Brundle explaining the coverage.

As he put it when the pit lane is open and the pitlane light is green Sky will be covering things.

Friday night news show.

Archives of old races

GP2 and GP3 covered

plus more to come.

I've been a tight git and added the HD package to get F1 rather than adding Sky Sports.....actually that's a lie, the wife pays for Sky and refused me Sky Sports as "I'm not paying £43 a month to watch TV"

I guess me paying the TV license, paying the electricity bill and having over £5k of AV equipment so she can watch Eastenders and One Born Every Minute in surround sound HD glory isn't enough to deserve an extra £20 a month so I can enjoy pretty much the only TV programs I'd enjoy watching.....Leeds UTD matches, and F1......:'(

I hope she falls on a spike!!!!

Have RTL got the coverage again this year? that could mean that 2012 is the year I finally get around to adding another dish for German satellite and Tatort on a Sunday night..

Think its wrong about Kimi being back in F1, probably his bank balance is needing a top up.
