Yesterday afternoon I watched in amazement as a large crow swooped down from an adjacent roof and snatched a sparrow in mid air.
It was like watching a sparrow hawk in action, but it was crow..

I have never seen that before.

Last summer I saw one attacking a collared dove on the ground, don't know if it knocked it down itself, it flew to a nearby tree as I walked past, the dove was beyond help, went a short way and watched to see what would happen, crow flew back down finished killed the dove and flew off with it, I was amazed, didn't think they did that either

It`s called evolution :D I have seen quite a few sit happily with a Buzzard on an old dead Tree, I can only assume they are waiting for the Buzzard to make the kill and then mob it to get the food. Seeing them hover identical to that of a Kestrel is not uncommon either.

doubt that very much Rich, were you standing still at the time, both are scavangers, preferring their food already dead :lol::lol:

:lol::lol::lol::lol: OOOOh fighting talk

Les :D

as a Gamekeeper I see this sort of thing all the time- usually Carrion Crows as they are large enough to tackle almost anything ( except my 12 bore of course :D)

:thinking: It`s been a long day Ingrid you may need to run that comment by me again. Are you saying Buzzards are scavengers and not killers?

As a small boy I remember watching a few corvids at Arundel take Shelduck chicks from off the water. Wish I was into photography back then.

They can hunt and kill Rich, but many of them I see are near the road taking the road kill, great opportunist when it comes to a free meal, so keep moving when you see them next time, else it could be a remake of that hitchcock film :p

Appreciate that Ingrid but I am talking near a small brook, never mentioned about being near a road. You been on the road too long :lol: ;)

Things don't only die on the roads Rich ;)
It's a well known way to attract buzzards, put a dead rabbit out and wait, just hope the foxes don't get it first
