I hope this doesn't fall foul of the forum rules, I used the contact section but have had no reply. If it does please remove it

Hey Guys,

I would really appreciate if you could spent 5 mins reading this :D I have been creating an e-book over the last month or so with the aim of selling it to raise money for the school I visited in Thailand in the summer (which some of you will know about). I spent 5 weeks working there helping to build a more permanent classroom facility to replace the bamboo structures they currently use. My time in Thailand has changed me as a person for the better and I can only thank the people of the small town where we spent the summer. I feel that this is some way of repaying the debt I feel that I owe them.

I have created a webpage with information on the school and a link where you can purchase a copy of my book for a measly £3.50 (less than a MacDonalds but more than half a weeks wages for the children's parents). Oh and did I mention the book is also available in spanish for those of you who are a bit more adventurous.

Every penny of the £3.50 sale price will be donated to the school so I will make nothing from this. I would appreciate if you could share this with as many people as possible be they friends, family etc and even purchase one for yourself. Literally every sale of this book will make a difference to the children's lives. If you can't spare £3.50 or would like to give more there also is a donation button on the page

The link to the project page is http://jacobjamesphotography.co.uk/forgottenborders.html

I hope you enjoy and thank you for taking your time to read this!

It's allowed, it's a good cause :) and well done. Just a quick note though, we haven't received a contact us. Did you use the form at the bottom of the page?

Just ordered mine :D

edited - looking forward to downloading it when I get in from work and looking through :)

No worries and I'm far too impatient to wait til I get home so I'm downloading it now!

I'm sure I will :D

I love making photobooks, especially for a good cause. I recently did a photo book to raise money for our local rugby club and got 100 printed off. I have 6 left and it's such a good feeling

I originally planned to get these printed but the cost and logistics made it nearly impossible and I'd hate to see how hard you have to work to sell a £20 book, it's hard enough getting some people to spare £3.50

I know what you mean. I've been selling mine for £20 and it's taken a lot of weekends and evenings of emails, website updates, facebook notices etc to sell those 100. And this is just within our local rugby club "community".

I do like the concept of the Blurb bookshop although I haven't yet used it but there are some on here that have

I can imagine it was a bit of a nightmare however the result at the end is always worth it! I've set my self a challenge of selling 500 copies, so far I haven't reached 1/10th of that so it looks like i'm going to have to start annoying friends and family until they give in :naughty:

The result is definitely worth it.

Are you on twitter? That might be quite useful for promotion?

Just had a quick look through

Really well done, thanks Jacob. I will have an in depth look and read later

How long has it been available for? Might be a case of patience and it will sell?

I can imagine it would look really good on an iPad or tablet or something downloaded, maybe plug this?

About a week, i'm just impatient I think :D It actually does work really well on my mums ipad, I might spend some time working on some pictures etc to market it better :) Thanks for the help

Now it's Ipad compatible!

I might be being a bit thick here, but what exactly do you get for your £3.50? Photos, obviously. But how many? How many pages? Just photos? Any descriptive text? You need to put this information on the web site. Perhaps a sample page or two as well.

Its a photo E-book made up of approx 38 pages, a mixture of text and photos. It has information on the history of the school and the area.

Regards

Jake

downloading as i type, a worthy cause and at only 3.50 its definitely worth it :D
all the best with the fundraising

definitely enjoyed it, such a heart warming story and great pictures, i envy the chance you have had to visit the kids and it looks like it truly affected your life going out there.
would love to do something like this just for the experience and a chance to be part of something great.

Cheers mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I am hoping to go back next summer and spend 6-7 weeks working on a documentary on the work of not just the school but the other NGOs and people working to help the people all the way up the border. I'm pretty excited!

i envy you so much for that, but this has given me some very interesting ideas, i will be speaking to my manager about it and hopefully will be able to get some time off and a sponsorship to do something similar. obviously not on such a grand scale, but its something ive always thought about so ive looked up volunteer work in africa, seems like an idea that is definitely plausible.
thankyou for inspiring me and i look forward to seeing that documentary next year.

I'd say go for it if you have the opportunity, you won't regret it. Just look around if you are going to go with an organisation as some of them seem to charge ££££s, which I feel is exploiting peoples passion to help. That said there are many of organisations who charge the bare minimum and do excellent jobs  good luck with whatever you choose

yes i have been doing research on it, did you do it through an organisation or did you set it up yourself?
i wouldnt really know where to start if i was to do it that way, but i shall keep on looking.
