TFT screen power supply question

Hi there all you computer bods :D ,
My sister has just bought a 2nd-hand cheap replacement TFT screen for her PC but she says it won't work. So I asked her to check the power and video cables were connected and she reckons it doesn't have a power cable (every other TFT screen I've used does have a seperate power cable). I believe it only has the standard 15 pin D-sub video cable.

So the question is:
can a TFT screen be powered through the normal signal cable (the D-sub one which plugs into the PC itself) - without a seperate power cable which plugs straight into the mains?

The guy she bought it off reckons it only needs the video cable and takes its power from the PC so she needs to change a setting in Windows (XP home), but I've had a look on my PC and can't find such a setting.

Does anyone know if he's right and if so where is this mysterious setting ?

Thanks,
Rich:)

Im afraid not. Even small TFT monitors can draw upwards of 50 watts. This would never be passed down the 15 pin D-Sub cable, that is for video information only.

Most TFT's work from a 12v (or 24 in rare cases) external power supply, or they have one built in, and require just a standard kettle style lead. So the person that sold her the monitor is either a bit dim, or was having her on. Unfortunatly, power supplies from the manufacturers (SP?) can cost alot... So try and hastle the seller for the part.

Hope that helps mate :)

Thanks for the info and it confirms my suspicions - I've only ever seen them with the kettle type power leads. I'll let my sister know.
Cheers

Could be an external brick. Tell her to turn it upside down and look at the back of it. Should be some sort of "hole" for something to go in - either a kettle lead, or small DC jack socket.

Could be an external brick.

err, a what  :)
I've just spoken to her and she says there is a small round hole next to the video socket - but she says its for earphones.
I asked her for the manufacturer but she said its not marked with a name/brand.

mine has neither kettle size or its own power.

If i lose my lead i'd be in trouble as i've not seen owt like it. And it has only amarican style plug on too. Damn xerox, dont tell you before you buy.

RickMezza get her to take a photo of the back of it or a few photos so we can look and see.

/edit failing that get her to make a note of all the info printed on the lable/back panel and we/you can google for something regarding manufactirer

err, a what  :)

A power supply that has a lead in each end, and is kinda square - like a brick. One lead goes to mains, other goes to small jack plug to go in to the peripheral.

A photo probably would be beneficial - there has to be a socket somewhere for the power - especially if there's a "headphone" socket - unless that headphone socket does indeed turn out to be the power jack.

If you can find some markings, we can get on the case to see what it should have.

Thanks everyone. MarkP - I know what you mean now - like a cable/adapter thing for a laptop.
Personally I reckon the 'headphone socket' is probably for a brick thing as suggested and the seller just didn't give her that with the monitor when she bought it. She's gonna contact the seller again to check and if not (try) to get her money back (ebay  I think).
ps getting my sis to take and email photos would require either;
a) a lot of patience from me explaining how to do it, or
b) me travelling to her house to take them myself

...errr, I'd better hop in the car :D

There's only 2 types of power connector for a TFT that I know of - Kettle lead (mains powered) & external DC power module like a laptops.

I think she's been sold a duffer!

Hope you get it sorted out.

There is definitely more than two

when having trouble trying to resource a leasd and power supply (if needed) for a screen before now i found there was a site on eBay that specialised in these things, will try to find you the URL but a quick search on there may dig something up, would be inclined to write letter or negative feedback or wotever to the seller unless its priovate then they won't care anyways but would still have a whinge, you never know.
