I have been really struggling to sort out tethering with live view so I can remotely operate the A7r (I'm stuck in the bedroom, the "studio" is in the front room).
With the EM5mk2 its not a problem, just run the control cable for the remote tripod head, run the tethertools USB cable, set camera to PC remote and fire up Olympus capture on the laptop, bob's you uncle, I can control everything, see what I'm shooting, even shift the AF point etc, but with the Sony the only thing that worked was using the app on the iPad , then yesterday I noticed Sony had released new utility software with an improved Remote app for the mac, but still no dice, the A7rii gives live view (only centre af point though) but not the A7r.
I had a look around youtube for some idea's and came across DSLR DASHBOARD and shock of all shocks, it works with the A7r, giving full remote control of the camera's settings and live view, ok its a little slow and glitchy but its free and actually works, not only with Sony camera's but most others that have built in wifi.
So if your stuck like I was, give it a try, it may not be perfect but it could solve a problem for some.
