Is this possible without a wi-fi card and without jail breaking? I just want to see a larger image of what is being/ has been photographed than is shown on the LCD screen.

No, but I have a 6D with wifi. I don't really use the wifi functions but I have had a play with it and it works fairly well.
I setup my camera on a tripod in front of a bird feeder and sat in the lounge using the iPad as liveview and the ability to change certain settings and fire the shutter. You can also use the iPad to view images stored on the card in the camera.
The card I linked to basically adds the same wifi functionality to the 7D.
You will need to download the canon app for it to work. That is free.
