I'm sure that those with one of Canon's latest DSLR's, there will be an awareness and understanding of the 'Dust Delete Data' function, for those that haven't tried it, here the results of a quick test of the function.

Canon's inbuilt sensor cleaning is an absolute joy, with the ability to clean a good proportion of dust from the sensor, but for those that shoot at wide DOF regularly (f11-f22), some residue dust can often be seen on the final image , this is where the 'dust delete data' function plays its part.

What it does is electronically map the dust on the low pass filter, this map is appended (tiny so doesn't affect file size) to any subsequent image file (raw or jpeg).

The dust can then be automatically edited out using the 'dust delete data' tool in Canon's DPP software.

Some before and after images, white card, taken at F22.

The first image is the full image at screen size (26% zoom), only the odd tiny spec of dust can be seen.

Second image is at actual pixels (100% zoom) with a small crop of the top right hand corner.

Third image is the same 100% zoom with the same top right hand corner crop, after being run through 'dust delete data' tool in DPP.

I'm pretty impressed with the ability to remove (or mask) any remaining dust bunnies.

I don't think for one moment I will use this on every image, but for those landscape shots with a lot of sky, it will be ideal.

And I'm so so pleased that the days of sensor swabs/sensor brushes/dust-aid and/or a monotonous 15 minutes with the spot healing brush tool are way in the past.

Good post, cheers.

Never used the function but didn't realise it would quite work that well!

Not sure if I will still use it though, would much prefer a sparkly clean sensor :D

Good post Les. Very impressive and useful.
