I'm planning on moving from my current location as it's just too quiet and i seriously can't cope anymore :lol: Don't get me wrong i love the countryside and grew up on a farm, but what i can't stand is the nearest city being over an hour away.

I'll hopefully be moving to Bristol in the next few months, and would like some info on what it's like. I'm not sure where i'll be working within the city as i haven't actually attended any interviews yet! But one is on Park street if that helps!?

Anyway what i'd like to know is:
- Where are the best places to live? (i'm single and in my mid 20's)
- What's the nightlife like? (i'm not into clubbing, decent bars are more my thing)
- What's the shopping like?

If you think i need to know anything else then please tell me :thumbs:
 
shopping at the moment is a nightmare, they are in the middle of re-developing the city centre but when thats completed at the end of the year it'll be fantastic.

nightlife down by the harbour is good, plently of bars - not sure what age range they are aimed at. I believe there are also many bars towards clifton.

You'll probably want to live in/near Clifton or Redland as they are the "happening" areas.
The city center is great for shopping, as is the Mall.

Bath which is pretty close has more "interestingness" by the spade full.
 
When I was your age Matt and living in Bristol I loved every minute but that was many years ago. My partners son who is 30yrs old has just gone to great lengths to move away from there. He used to love it too but reckons it's the pits now. Shame really. I visited a few weeks before Christmas and it brought back lots of fond memories for me (although I think they've wrecked the City Centre).
 
Hi Matt, Park Street is the Clifton end of town just up from the docks;) you'll find plenty to interest your photography needs in and around that area whether it be architechture or wildlife.

The docks are great, plenty to see and do, when I visited a few weeks ago they were filming some thing or other, there is plenty of wildlife in that area to, Cormorants or Shags :thumbs: are plentiful and I even saw a fox although it was only a quick glimpse before it ran of with what looked like a seagull:clap:

They run boat trips from the docks along the gorge which takes you under Clifton Suspension bridge and there is wildlife aplenty down there.

Up Park street you have lots of old Bristol buildings and even some modern graffitti Banksy style:thumbs:

As has been said the centre is in a mess at the moment but it is going through a massive revamp and was the largets building site in europe according to BBC news just a few weeks ago.

You have the zoo, and even the NHU which worth a trip, I saw the fantastic David Attenborough exiting there one day:clap:

Plenty to see and do, and it is handy for other places to, Cardiff is just a short trip away, great for the upcoming Six nations rugby, I frequent the outside of the ground on match days and have some fabulous portraits of dressed supporters. It's great eveyone enters into the spirit, we talked to tha mounted copper and he said there's never any trouble, they treat it as a training day apparently.

If you do move, enjoy it, visit Bath, Cardiff, Gloucester and if wildlife's your thing there are owls at the moment at Aust wharf, you'll need a long lens though :thumbs:
 
Unless it was in Clifton I wouldn't even think about living in Brizzul. Bath is considerably more beautiful, but also more expensive ;(
 
If i move to bristol i'd move to Clifton/Redland/Cotham... Bath is great as a place to visit at the weekend and i might keep it at that. It's quite small and quiet if you're not a student!
 
Your best bet is to ask Bristol Pete/Diego Garcia, he'll tell you all you need to know about Bristol. That's if he still visits this forum :shrug:. I know he's still over on AVForums.

Yep, Bristol. Like Marmite. Love it or loathe it. Its home to me. I like it.

Single bloke in the mid 20's then I guess that for nightlife then Whiteladies Rd and the Harbour side would be good for you. Depends however. They can be a little bit 'lad about town' where the kids all wear straight leg trousers and checked shirts. That said there are some decent pubs, bars etc to be found.

Park st is Bristols answer to bohemian shopping with cool clothes shops and some great sneaker shops too. As others have said, the City is being redeveloped and is due to be completed in late 2009. That is Broadmead - not the centre. The centre is cool and a nice place to chill in the summer with loads of bars, coffee shops and nice eateries.

Other things to think about are the Ashton Court Festival, The Balloon Fiesta, The Harbour Festival, Bristol Rugby, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, The Hippodrome, The Colston Hall, The suspension Bridge and Avon Gorge. The Downs, which is the largest expanse of inner city grass anywhere in the world.

There is a decent local mag called Venue which gives you a weekly low down on gigs, events, things to do etc.

Anyway, far to much to write about, just enjoy it.

Hi Im from bristol! Lived there for half of my life. Try to live in the best areas i.e. Sneyd Park (next to the gorgeous Downs and cliff) and Clifton. The former is actually the best area in Bristol, not Clifton (contrary to popular beliefs). There are other decent (but not as good) areas like Redland. But avoid St Pauls...etc it is horrible. Park street has plenty of nice bars, and shopping is not bad with the Mall and the city centre, which ofcourse is under renovation at the moment. Next year it will be huge!
 
A lot of people seem to think its just clifton/park st/redland is the place to live!
Unfortunately it is also bloody expensive, there are many more areas that are worth looking at, ie, bedminster,southville,totterdown, the harbouside developement,
and then there are the surburbs, ie, hanham, warmley,downend, ect.(my side of town)

Obviously being a major metropolis it does have its poor areas, which are just as interesting as some of the trendy areas.

I have lived in Bristol all my life & I love it here! as Diego has already pointed out there is to much to write down here.

And for someone in their mid twenties, there are more nightclubs than you can shake a stick at!:woot:

Hate the place personally but my missus loves it for shopping. Her mate lives in Clifton and loves it. I would be happier living somewhere like Keynsham or Saltford, near enough :)

So which other areas other than Clifton/Redland are really worth considering? When i next move i will be looking to buy a house/flat and so locations are really something i'd like to think about so that i know if a move is really viable :)

Its probably better if you look around at the different areas to see which may be suitable for you, and it will also depend on how much you are going to pay:shrug:

The harbourside may be worth a consideration?

Anyway i'll be in Bristol on Thursday for an interview, hopefully it'll go well, otherwise i guess i'll have to try again :D

Did you happen to look at the prices for Harbourside on the availability page?! I'd be looking at a 2 bed place so if needs must i can rent out a room to help with the mortgage. Really though i won't be buying for at least 6months after i move to the area. Budget all depends on what deposit i can put together, and how well my subtle 'i need money' hints go with the family ;)
 
Well I hope the interview goes OK!

It all depends on how much you are willing to pay for rent to where you will be living really.

If you are going to be working in the town centre, then you could try around north street in bedminster or totterdown, ashton, henleaze, clifton, southville.

There are certain areas to stay clear of, but I had better not name those:eek:

I was born, bread and even returned to Bristol after traveling around various parts of the country for work.

As anywhere it has good and bad points

Good -

10mins drive from the city and you are on the verge of the Cotswolds/Countryside
Varied Historic past
Central Bristol (shopping/entertainment) in the midst of total regeneration...
The mad woman who stands in the centre of town dressed as the "Bride of Christ" - Come to think of it not seen for a while
Great Nightlife.
Great Music scene

Bad-

Bristol Council cant organise the brewing of a cup of tea.
Public Transport Very Poor and Very Expensive.
City Centre rush hour congestion OK, Surrounding areas V.Bad - If I commuted by car it will take 45mins to go 3/4mile...
House Prices Expensive (same story nationally) 4 Bed Detached North Bristol Fringe (Bradley (Sadley Broke))circa.£420- £300,000
 
I dont like cities

I would go as far as to say I hate them.

however the only two cities I have ever been to and spent any time in that I would even consider living in are Bristol and Hamburg.

Both have something about them that I liked.

I'll be selling a nice 3 bed Semi in Filton in the new year, with a converted room in the loft I currently use as my digital darkroom (oh and a massive double garage)!!. £170K to you sir!!!

I'd go along with the previous comments

Sneyd Park, Clifton, Redland - Very Expensive
Henleaze, Cotham, St Andrews, Cotham - Expensive
Bedminster, Filton - MOR
Southmead, Lockleaze, Totterdown, Knowle West, - Avoid!!

These are my own opinions, its a good town to live in, I've lived here all my life (37yrs) and its only when you take people from outside Bristol around the sights you begin to realise how lucky you are!!
