Hi all

I’m really enjoying my garden bird photography and currently use a Panasonic 100-300 on my Olympus M10 iii. However I'm looking at upgrading so would I be better buying a Olympus 100-400 f4-6.3 or a Olympus 40-150 f2.8 pro. I know the 150 has less reach but would the better glass mean I could crop in to get a better image.

Thanks

Jack

One thing I did when I was moving from 4/3 to M4/3 was to look at which focal lengths I took the majority of my images at (I think Lightroom can give you a chart). I then based my new lens decisions on that data given I didn't see my type of photography changing.

So if you find yourself mostly shooting close to the 300mm mark then you might consider the 100-400 (I think there is one for sale on here right now actually - I am not associated with the owner). If you find yourself shooting towards the 200mm mark or less then the 40-150 F/2,8 is a cracking lens. You can crop or get the 1,4x converter.

I don't know if it has better glass, the biggest difference is the aperture.

The 100-400 is an excellent lens, however more light would be nice :)

If you need the length, I think it would give better images than crops from a shorter lens, as long as there is enough light (that's the stuff we sometimes see in summer :) )
