Im just wondering what I could get for my £300 if I wanted to spend all that on one lens. New and 2nd hand.

The canon 70-200 f4L wouldnt be too far off that from Kerso.

What camera do you have? I'm sure you could get the Nikkor 70-300VR

EDIT - Not for a canon you cant sorry! :)

If it's a Canon the 70-300 IS is the best tele at that price. :)

75-300 IS would be your best choice unless you don't have much light to play with the 70-200 f4 would be better.

liam.

It would be nice to see a shoot off between the 70-200/4 and cropped versus the 70-300 IS uncropped. It would probably need a get together somewhere as it's unlikely anybody would have both.

Edit...I just found some sample crops at 70 and 200. The 70-200/f wins hands down at both ends.
Other advantages of the 70-200/4....it's parfocal, doesn't have a rotating front element, AF is faster and it is f/4 through the range.

The downside is the lack of IS.

I have just bought the Canon 70-200mm F4 L.

Price was about £420 from Warehouse Ex but there is a £70 rebate if bought before 31/12. Making this a bargain £350 (Not sure of Ian, Kelso's price though)

Anyway, my intention is to find a second user mint Canon 1.4x extender at a later date. I have seen them go for less than £100 on the US market, so will wait until next year. (lol funds really)

This then will give me the budget end best of both worlds an excellent 70-200mm L glass for multiple uses and the addition of the 1.4x extender will give me the reach I want (roughly 100-280mm) for say Airline Photography or Wildlife (just at 1 stop expense)
I think this is the right way to go about it, on my budget. I used to have a 100-400mm L and to be honest I didn't like it. Didn't like the push pull tele action and I thought it a little soft.

wouldnt 200 be a little short for something like wildlife?

Yes, much too short! For wildlife you need at least 400mm or more. For birding you need 600mm or more.

So save up a little more...
