I'm currently trying to replace a selection of lenses for my Canon Eos, I used to have:
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

I have been considering:
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I am therefore looking for a suitable lens to cover the telephoto ground. I could get another 75-300 (equivelent is now a 70-300mm), but I was after any advice or opinions that anyone can offer as a suitabble telephoto to complement the 10-22 and the 24-105 that I'm currently considering.

Any opinions?

Hi Thomas (and welcome to the forum)

Given that you're considering a 10-22 and a 24-105 then a 70-200/4 should not frighten you away on price and it's probably the best VFM lens you can buy in the medium telephoto zoom range. It'll also accept a T/C but I would suggest only a 1.4x as the 2x will lose you AF and too much IQ.

Or you could go Sigma.

The 10-20mm is highly regarded, as is the 7-=200 f2.8 EX DG APO Macro.

The latter can be used with the Sigma 1.4x EX DG TC.

A lot better value than the Canon Equivelents.

I also have all three for sale due to a system switch to Olympus.

I have both the 10-22 and 24-105 (as per my signature). I decided on the EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM to cover my requirements (non-DO version of that lens, by the way)

I have the 24-105 f4 IS L and the Sigma 100-300 f4 EX. I leave the Sigma at home most of the time, as its fairly big and heavy, unless I know I'll need it. If i need longer I use a 28-300 Tamron as its small and light.

I have a Sigma 10-20 if I need wider than 24mm.

How much of a reach do you want/need. You've used a 300mm zoom, was that about right? to short or to long. If you found the 300mm about right then you could replace it as, you suggested, with another of similar range. To long, then as been suggeted earlier maybe look at the 70-200. Lovely lens and lightweight to. To short, well you probably need to start looking at something up to 400mm. That could get expensive with Canon glass.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to set a budget.

I love spending other peoples money:)

Hi Tom

Welcome to TP. I think Chappers has hit the nail on the head with the budget idea...

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll have to see what the insurance company offer me, before I can make a definate decision, so they should set a budget for me.
Thanks for the welcome Sam - as my house mate you probablly could have just said that to me.
As fr the tele I would prefer to get something greater than 300, like the canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM but the budget is not going to go that far for sure.
we will have to wait and see......
