I am thinking of getting a new telephone landline number, one which has the nearest city code. Has anyone done this before? I have contacted a couple of number providers but the buggers have me confused... Basically I want the number that I can now divert it to my virtual assistant to answer when I am not available, the companies that I have spoke to will sell me a number but then want so £x amount for every call received. I think I should just be able to buy a number and then point it to my desired destination.....maybe I am wrong but advice would be greatly appreciated:)

A skype in number is cheap and can be redirected

I use voipfone which I would recommend. I mainly work away from my home office and i've set it to divert to my mobile. If you've set up a diversion it still works even if your internet is down. They do charge to forward the calls however it all seems at reasonable rates for the convenience of getting that service

Vonage are also advertising their services a lot these days...along the lines of live/work anywhere and still have a London area code.
